Listed below are three primary reasons why beginning your resume early will be advantageous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Promotes Skill Building<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you write a resume early in your college career, you can use it as a guide to identify which skills, experiences, and activities you need to develop in school to help you as you apply for internships, full-time jobs, or graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Helps You Be Prepared<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By preparing a master or industry version of your resume early, you will be better prepared for any opportunity that arises. You may need a resume when applying for career-related summer jobs and\/or internships, admission to an academic program, scholarships, or on-campus job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Helps Keep Track of What You Do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you start your resume early, you will be able to keep track of everything you do throughout your college career. Many students who create their first resume as seniors have forgotten the details of what they did in their first and second years. Your master resume can serve as a reference to help you remember information as you modify future r\u00e9sum\u00e9s and prepare for interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">How can I highlight my experience?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bullet points describe what was accomplished or learned in a certain experience. They allow the employer to understand how each experience relates to the one for which you are applying and answer the questions \u201cWhat?\u201d \u201cHow?\u201d and \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did you do it? (Skills used + action verbs)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Review the list of tasks and locate patterns in the types of responsibilities you had. These tasks demonstrate the skills gained from the experience. Look at the job description for the position you are applying for, highlight the skills most desired for that position, and incorporate them into your bullet points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each bullet point should start with a strong action verb. If the experience is still occurring, the verb is in the present tense. If it has ended, the past tense is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did you do it? (Results)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This element adds context to the tasks so the person reading the r\u00e9sum\u00e9 better understands your previous experiences. Consider the importance and end result of your tasks. Quantify results whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What did you do? (Situation or Task)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To start, brainstorm a list of all the tasks you completed during that experience. They serve as a professional assessment of your potential to complete graduate school or perform successfully on the job.&nbsp;Therefore, it is important to develop relationships with your instructors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take advantage of your faculty mentor\u2019s invitation to meet whether you are on campus or online. Speak with your instructors outside of class (e.g., discuss topics from class you\u2019d like to learn more about, learn more about their research, get career advice). Get involved! Below are tips and resources to help you reach out to faculty members and successfully ask them to write a strong letter for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which faculty member should I ask for a LOR?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty with whom you have taken at least one course. Preferably, you would have done very well in these courses and made a connection with \/ stood out favorably to your instructor. Ask yourself if you have made a great impression on this faculty. Ask yourself if they see you as hard-working, professional, polished, and mature. Then, ask&nbsp;<em>them<\/em>&nbsp;if they can write you a strong LOR for graduate school or a job you are applying for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not assume a faculty member will agree to write you a letter even if you did well in their course(s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all requests for a LOR will be accepted. Do not be offended if they say no. The most common reasons faculty might decline your request include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They do not know you or your work well enough to offer a professional assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak or uninformative LORs decrease your chances of getting into the program or job you desire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Timing or workload issues. This is why you should ask well in advance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When should I ask for a LOR?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should request an LOR at least 6 weeks before the first application is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last-minute requests often get rejected due to timing or workload constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What should I include in my request for a LOR?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A polite introduction and overview of your request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The course(s) you took with them and the grade(s) you earned there.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The semester(s) and year(s) you took the course(s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your graduation date (actual or planned).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any research activity in and\/or outside of required coursework, with the faculty member or with others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any presentations of your coursework or research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A current resume\/CV<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The statement of purpose you will be sending with your application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An unofficial copy of your transcript.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GRE scores, if applicable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sample coursework from your course(s) with that faculty member.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizational or leadership activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any other experiences outside the university, such as employment, volunteer work, or internships related to your field of study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Honors and awards you have received<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information about the program you are applying to (name of school, department, program, and focus of study to the best of your knowledge).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A specific address (physical or electronic) to which the LOR should be sent.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If any physical paperwork needs to be sent, include it along with an addressed and stamped envelope.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the LOR is to be submitted via an online form, list the faculty member on the website that will send them an automated request (but only after the faculty member has agreed to write your letter).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deadline for the LOR (usually the application deadline).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the graduate school has a specific form that the faculty member must complete, provide a copy of the form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are requesting LORs for multiple programs, provide an organized list that includes the information mentioned above for each program. The nearest deadlines should be listed first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double-check that all the information you are sending is correct and up to date.
