DOS and SEVIS require CGE to validate the exchange visitor\u2019s arrival within 30 days of the program start date on the Form DS-2019.\u00a0 If the exchange visitor\u2019s SEVIS record is not validated within these 30 days, it will automatically become \u201cinvalid\u201d and the exchange visitor will need to leave the U.S. immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attend the university you are authorized to attend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the immigration school transfer procedure when necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be in good academic standing and make progress towards an academic program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extend your DS-2019 before its expiration date if you cannot complete your academic program by the original expiration date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update your DS-2019 in accordance with immigration regulations in the event of change of academic program or level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain full-time enrollment during the academic year: a minimum of 12 credit hours per term for undergraduate students and 8 credit hours (or number of credit hours defined by the specific graduate program) per term for graduate students. During any given term in which the department has officially appointed you as a Graduate Student Research Assistant or Graduate Student Instructor, you may enroll for 6 credit hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit on-campus employment to 20 hours per week during the academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not accept unauthorized employment and not work off campus without authorization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your passport valid at all times. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months into the future on the day you return to the U.S. from a trip abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain required health insurance coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the Departure form if you leave the program 30 days or more before the end date of the DS-2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update current and permanent address information in SIS within 10 days of moving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vT8z7xPkBTUZnf2CzWFV3DpJTkdBuMKksVbd7mNqO-WHcz8DVRPfYmWakVkOVR8G709ayPjrUxhybxu\/pub\">Re-entry into the U.S.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To maintain legal J-1 status, a <strong>J-1 visiting scholar<\/strong> or professor must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report to the CGE for a mandatory immigration check-in. DOS and SEVIS require CGE to validate the exchange visitor\u2019s arrival within 30 days of the program start date on the Form DS-2019. If the exchange visitor\u2019s SEVIS record is not validated within these 30 days, it will automatically become \u201cinvalid\u201d and the exchange visitor will need to leave the U.S. immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a valid DS-2019. Extensions can be completed with your J-1 sponsor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a valid passport. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months into the future on the day you return from your trip abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct employment only as indicated on the DS-2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: Departments must contact the Center for Global Engagement if they would like the exchange visitor to engage in collaborative work outside of UM-Flint or if the exchange visitor wishes to participate in occasional lectures at another institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>File timely and appropriate transfer and extension notification to the Exchange Visitor Program (EVP) through the sponsoring agency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain required health insurance coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Update current and permanent address information in SIS within 10 days of moving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-secondary-color has-css-opacity has-secondary-background-color has-background mt-5 mb-5\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-4 has-primary-color has-text-color\">Visitor Categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-b8d31a11389d2ff74e594cede6425e5b\"><strong>Research Scholars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An individual primarily conducts research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project. The research scholar may also teach or lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-26a4fe36caaf1f23ba7cf4ca11592693\"><strong>Short-Term Scholars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A professor, research scholar, specialist, or a person with similar education or accomplishments coming to the U.S. on a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills at research institutions, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited educational institutions, or similar types of institutions. Examples include educators, scientists, research fellows, writers, and museum administrators. The short-term scholar may also engage in collaborative research.<br><br><em>Professors:<\/em> An individual primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting.
