href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdlg1X_YcrU2pMSuXVUThg9IVnPSPhpwM25L5M5H85XRvx7Hg\/viewform\">Letter of invitation<\/a><\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Maintaining Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">J-1 Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To maintain legal J-1 status, a J-1 student must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Attend the mandatory immigration check-in and orientation program. The Department of State and SEVIS require the CGE to validate the exchange visitor&#8217;s arrival within 30 days of the program start date on the Form DS-2019. If the exchange visitor&#8217;s SEVIS record is not validated within these 30 days, it will automatically become invalid and the exchange visitor will need to leave the U.S. immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Attend the university you are authorized to attend.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Complete the immigration school transfer procedure when necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Be in good academic standing and make progress toward an academic program.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Extend your DS-2019 before its expiration date if you cannot complete your academic program by the original expiration date.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Update your DS-2019 in accordance with immigration regulations in the event of a change of academic program or level.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Maintain full-time enrollment during the academic year: a minimum of 12 credit hours per term for undergraduate students and 8 credit hours (or the number of credit hours defined by the specific graduate program) per term for graduate students. During any given term in which the department has officially appointed you as a Graduate Student Research Assistant or Graduate Student Instructor, you may enroll for 6 credit hours.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Limit on-campus employment to 20 hours per week during the academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Not accept unauthorized employment and not work off campus without authorization.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Keep your passport valid at all times. The passport must be valid for at least six months into the future on the day you return to the U.S. from a trip abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Maintain required health insurance coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Complete the departure form if you leave the program 30 days or more before the end date of the DS-2019.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Update current and permanent address information in the Student Information System (SIS) within 10 days of moving.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vT8z7xPkBTUZnf2CzWFV3DpJTkdBuMKksVbd7mNqO-WHcz8DVRPfYmWakVkOVR8G709ayPjrUxhybxu\/pub\">re-entry into the U.S. guidance<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">J-1 Visiting Scholars and Professors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To maintain legal J-1 status, a J-1 visiting scholar or professor must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Report to the CGE for a mandatory immigration check-in. The Department of State and SEVIS require the CGE to validate the exchange visitor&#8217;s arrival within 30 days of the program start date on the Form DS-2019. The passport must be valid for at least six months into the future on the day you return from your trip abroad.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Conduct employment only as indicated on the DS-2019.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>File timely and appropriate transfer and extension notifications to the Exchange Visitor Program through the sponsoring agency.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Maintain required health insurance coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Update current and permanent address information in SIS within 10 days of moving.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Departments must contact the Center for Global Engagement if they would like the exchange visitor to engage in collaborative work outside of UM-Flint, or if the exchange visitor wishes to participate in occasional lectures at another institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Visitor Categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Research Scholars<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An individual who primarily conducts research, observes, or consults in connection with a research project. The research scholar may also teach or lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Short-Term Scholars<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A professor, research scholar, specialist, or a person with similar education or accomplishments coming to the U.S. on a short-term visit for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills at research institutions, museums, libraries, post-secondary accredited educational institutions, or similar types of institutions. Examples include educators, scientists, research fellows, writers, and museum administrators. The short-term scholar may also engage in collaborative research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Professors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An individual primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting. A professor may also conduct research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">College or University Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals in the United States for the primary purpose of studying at an institution of higher education under the sponsorship of an exchange visitor program designated by the Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Student Interns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Programs designated in the college and university students category can also sponsor in the student intern category.
