Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,
After a remarkable career at the University of Michigan-Flint, Keith Moreland, Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Professor of Accounting is retiring on July 10, 2020. His last day as Interim Provost will be Tuesday, June 30.
Raised in the greater Flint area, Professor Moreland was hired at UM-Flint in 1994 after working in both higher education and the private sector. He taught at Xavier University and at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York prior to working for Deloitte and Roto-Rooter in the field of accounting. In the School of Management (SOM), Professor Moreland is known as a caring faculty member. He has taught thousands of students courses in accounting and auditing and received many accolades for his approachable teaching style. As a result, Professor Moreland was the recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors. He is a natural mentor, providing guidance and support to students, junior faculty, and staff.

A dedicated scholar, Professor Moreland has widely published in top journals in his field including Research in Accounting Regulation, The CPA Journal and, Issues in Accounting Education. Active in professional organizations, Professor Moreland has chaired the Accounting Educators’ Task Force and is a Trustee for the Michigan Accountancy Foundation.
Service to the campus community has been a priority for Professor Moreland. He served on various campus committees, including two terms as Chair of the University Academic Affairs Advisory Committee, on two Chancellor Search Advisory Committees including one as the chair, and several terms on the SOM Executive Committee. He has been recognized for his service contributions as the recipient of the UM-Flint Distinguished Service Faculty award.
Professor Moreland has also provided leadership and guidance in important administrative roles. He has served as Associate Dean, as Director of Academic Programs in the School of Management, and as the Interim Dean of the School of Health Professions and Studies. Professor Moreland displays a keen understanding of an administrator’s responsibility to the institution. His sincerity, diligence, and love for this university have made him an excellent professor, researcher, colleague, and leader.
I had the great pleasure of working with Professor Moreland in his final role of Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since January 2020. During this time, Professor Moreland’s focus and perspective from his years at UM-Flint were invaluable as we worked together to strengthen academic affairs on campus. When the pandemic began to take hold, Professor Moreland was a steady leader as he collaborated with faculty and staff through an unprecedented transition that continues to this day. It was Professor Moreland and his team that helped to ease the burden of a very difficult time through decisive action and clear communication.
Please join me in thanking Professor Moreland for all he has done for this campus over the years. He is an extraordinary faculty role model who has prioritized teaching and scholarship above all and then served the institution in other capacities when called upon. He has inspired students and junior faculty to reach their greatest potential. He is a wonderful colleague who embodies the spirit and dedication to excellence that makes UM-Flint the special university it is. Please join me and my wife Fataneh (his former colleague at SOM) in wishing Professor Keith Moreland the very best.
