UM-Flint Professor on Internet-of-Things Security, Presents at International Cyber Conference Summit
Suleyman Uludag, an associate professor of computer science at UM-Flint, researches IoT security. This expertise puts Uludag in high demand as a consultant and speaker. On October 7, he spoke at the North American International Cyber Summit, an event hosted by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that brought together cybersecurity professionals from government, business, and academia. There he outlined why IoT attacks are increasing and what public policy can do to help. Two of his most recent collaborations have been with the Food & Drug Administration and Beaumont Health System. Bisgin worked with the Food & Drug Administration to create an AI system that automatically detects insect contaminants from images. With an overall accuracy of 80%, Bisgin’s program can quickly identify the species contaminating stored foods, which in turn informs possible causes and solutions to the infestation. In a collaboration with the Beaumont Health System, Bisgin used machine learning to identify specific biomarkers associated with a condition known as Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR). From those hundreds of data points, Bisgin’s approach can narrow it down to a handful of potential biomarkers associated with the condition.
Faculty Publication Spotlight: Predicting App Intrusiveness by Analyzing App Descriptions
UM-Flint Computer Science professor, Dr. Halil Bisgin, has had a paper accepted for publication titled "Predicting App Intrusiveness Using LSTM Networks to Analyze App Descriptions" has been accepted for inclusion in the Future Technologies Conference (FTC) 2020 scheduled from 5-6 November 2020 in Vancouver, Canada.
UM-Flint students Cole Rauh and Alex Latunski led a team in developing an app that allows users to play video games by producing notes on a musical instrument. They won first place overall at MSU's annual coding competition.
A partnership between Google and the University of Michigan’s Flint and Ann Arbor campuses aims to provide a smartphone app and other digital tools to Flint residents and officials to help them manage the ongoing water crisis. Mark Allison is an assistant professor of computer science at UM-Flint and the faculty leader of the Flint student team.
Students from the Computer Science & Computer Information Systems program have found meaningful internship opportunities with Sipit--a local company with the mission of bringing technology and digital tools to small businesses and non-profits in Flint, while creating 200 high tech jobs within the next 3-5 years.
Dr. Mark Allison is conducting drone research with some of his Computer Science and Computer Information Systems students. Says graduate student Anil Kumar Kuvvarapu, "I enjoy challenge of coming up with new, authentic solutions to problems which are multidisciplinary. Such tasks are typically complex and require a lot of time, but the experience is worth it."
