Victors for UM-Flint logo

The University of Michigan-Flint is a world class institution because of the incredible talent and dedication of its active and retired faculty and staff.  Together, all of us uphold the proud values and traditions that have helped create the UM-Flint education we know and love today.

Our faculty, staff, and retirees demonstrate a firm commitment to achieving our university’s mission, a commitment that is demonstrated by the time and talent they contribute on a daily basis and also through their financial support for the programs and initiatives that mean the most to them.

In March 2018, the University of Michigan-Flint will once again participate in the “Give from Within” faculty, staff, and retiree giving initiative.  By making a gift of any size, faculty, staff, and retirees will join a global network of people whose combined support makes an important difference in the lives of our students, preparing them for success in the classroom and beyond.

Please take a moment to learn more about the Give from Within initiative. Below you'll find the University of Michigan's Give from Within video, explaining why so many of our colleagues give back to the university, as well as testimonials from our faculty and staff ambassadors and some frequently asked questions.

The decision to give is a personal one.  Please consider the initiatives you would like to support at the University of Michigan-Flint and give from within to help the next generation of students shape their futures.  Thank you for being a Victor for UM-Flint.

We appreciate your support and partnership.

How do I give?

We make giving as easy as possible. To donate online, by mail, or over the phone, visit our How to Give page for complete instructions.

Set Up a Payroll Deduction

One of the most convenient ways for current employees to make a gift is through payroll deduction.  To arrange a payroll deduction gift, visit Michigan Online Giving, select the fund you wish to support and enter your monthly gift amount, and select “Proceed to Checkout.”  From the “Configure Your Gift” step of the checkout process, select the gift option “I currently work for U-M and would like my gift to be deducted monthly from my payroll.”  You will be directed to log in to Wolverine Access to complete your gift.

Please note that online payroll gifts are continuous until the employee chooses to stop the deduction by emailing a request to umgift@umich.edu or calling University Advancement at 424-5448.

If you would prefer, you may also arrange a payroll gift by completing this payroll deduction form and mailing to:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are gifts from faculty, staff, and retirees so important to the University of Michigan-Flint?

Gifts from faculty, staff, and retirees provide funding for important initiatives at the University of Michigan-Flint.  They also are an endorsement of the University, announcing to alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations that UM-Flint is an institution worthy of support and that support starts at “home.”

Why do I keep seeing the phrase “Give from Within”?

We understand that giving is a very personal choice and want each donor’s giving experience to be meaningful.  That is why we invite faculty, staff, and retirees to designate their gifts to the programs and causes at the university that mean the most to them.  This is your gift and your choice.  It is a decision that begins from “within” each person.

How is the Give from Within initiative different from other fundraising efforts on campus?

Similar to other fundraising efforts on campus, gifts made by faculty, staff, and retirees during the Give from Within initiative will count towards the Victors for Michigan capital campaign, launched in 2013 and rolled-out at UM-Flint in 2015.

Unique to the Give from Within initiative, however, is the opportunity for faculty, staff, and retirees to join together, at a designated time, to support those areas at the university that mean the most to them.

When will faculty, staff, and retirees be asked to make a gift?

While gifts from faculty, staff, and retirees are welcome throughout the year, the Give from Within initiative will take place during March 2017.

Faculty, staff, and retiree gifts made during the Give from Within initiative and at other times during the year will be included in participation totals.

May I designate my gift to a particular area of the University and how will it be used?

Yes! The guiding principal of the “Give from Within” initiative is that donors may designate their gift to the area of the university that means the most to them.  Gifts may be directed to a particular department, program, initiative, scholarship, or other eligible* gift fund.

Having trouble finding a particular fund?  Please contact University Advancement for assistance.

*For questions about charitable gifts, please review the University of Michigan’s gift acceptance policy at http://spg.umich.edu/policy/602.02.

How much of my gift will actually go to the fund(s) I select?

100 percent of your gift will go to the fund(s) you choose.

Is my gift confidential?

Details about your gift will be kept confidential, and individual employee gift amounts are not shared with your manager.  Your participation may be recognized through donor listings or honor rolls, specific to the Give from Within initiative or Victors for Michigan-Flint campaign.  If you wish to make your gift anonymously, please be sure to note your preference when making your contribution.

Not everyone can afford to make a large contribution. What difference could a small gift make?

Each gift - no matter how big or how small - makes an important difference.  Your gift will be combined with gifts from other individuals to fund initiatives and programs that benefit our students and educators.

Is my gift tax deductible?

Yes!  For every qualified charitable deduction, the University of Michigan will issue a gift receipt that may be used for tax purposes.

I cannot remember what I gave to last year.  How do I find out?

The staff in University Advancement is more than happy to review your giving history with you.

I am not sure where I want to designate my gift.  What is the best way to review options?

You may review giving options, with fund descriptions, on Michigan Online Giving or speak with a staff member in University Advancement.
