Retired Academic Advisor, Education Dept.
School of Education & Human Services
I began my journey with UM-Flint in the summer of 1980 as a teacher looking for summer work. I found that employment opportunity and then remained an employee here for nearly 27 years. I was working on campus when UCEN had just opened and the Recreation Center was under construction. The library was on the 5th floor of French Hall and UPAV was a shopping center. My experiences were amazing. I started in the bookstore, moved to the library, then again to the registrar. A job opportunity for my husband moved our family to Indiana, but when we returned to Michigan seven years later, a UM-Flint director approached me and asked that I consider returning to work at UM-Flint. I then joined the staff of the undergraduate admissions office, then CO-OP, and finally the education department where I enjoyed some of my most rewarding work as an academic advisor to elementary education students.
I loved that I worked with people who were like-minded. I loved that I grew as a person working at such an incredible campus. There were so many avenues to explore, so many people to meet and collaborate with, and abundant opportunities offered by the university to encourage thoughtful and meaningful growth for students, faculty, and staff.
I give to UM-Flint because UM-Flint took a chance and hired me many years ago. The university gave me an opportunity to do work I love in a fantastic environment. I give because I believe in giving back and I know through personal encounters with students that our support matters. GO BLUE!
