environment. The institution does not tolerate violence of any type, including the crimes of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. This resource guide is designed to support university students, faculty, and staff who have experienced these situations in understanding their options for reporting to law enforcement and the university, as well as to inform them of available support services, including confidential resources provided by the university and those available in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Preserving Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Sexual Assault<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All victims of sexual assault have a right, under Michigan law, to have a forensic medical examination and evidence kit collected up to 120 hours (5 days) after the assault in order to preserve any evidence of the assault. The forensic exam will be administered by a registered nurse who has received advanced training to provide care and treatment to sexual assault victims. The nurse can also provide emergency contraception, treatment for sexually transmitted infections and other needed medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you seek evidence collection through any of these facilities, the police will be contacted; however, it is up to you whether to share any information with law enforcement. If you choose not to file a police report at the time the kit is completed, the medical facility where the evidence was collected will maintain the kit for at least one year. In accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(34nnqwmtbsejhkurhkctlqf2))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&amp;objectName=mcl-752-931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MCL 752.931-935<\/a>, when a kit is turned over to law enforcement, you will be provided with a serial number\/sign in associated to your collection kit. If visible injuries are present, it can be helpful to document them with photographs, if it is safe to do so. It is also important to seek medical attention if possible and safe to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Stalking<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have experienced stalking, it can be helpful to an investigation to retain any evidence of that behavior, including documentation of any unwanted communication (whether written, oral, or electronic), postings (such as on social media), gifts, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Reporting to the Police<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university encourages anyone who believes they have experienced domestic\/dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking to make a criminal report with law enforcement. Even in such cases, though, you do not have to participate in the university or law enforcement processes if you do not wish to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Filing a Formal Complaint Under Title IX<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to file a formal complaint under the university&#8217;s Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct, you must contact the Title IX Coordinator at the information noted above. In all cases, the university&#8217;s policies and procedures seek to provide a prompt, fair, and impartial resolution of the concern reported. You can contact the Title IX Coordinator in addition to any of the other resources noted in this guide.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Protective Measures<\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Court-Ordered Protection Orders<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CGS has staff who can provide information about obtaining court-ordered personal protection orders, assist individuals in obtaining such orders, and assist with safety planning. A PPO is a court order given to another person to stop threats or violence against you.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please contact CGS, the YWCA of Greater Flint, or UM-Flint Department of Public Safety for assistance. If you obtain a court-ordered personal protection order, please let UM-Flint&#8217;s DPS know and provide them with a copy. The university will uphold such lawfully issued orders and enforce them through UM-Flint&#8217;s DPS.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Campus Supportive Measures<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supportive Measures are individualized services, accommodations, and other assistance that the university offers and may put in place, without fee or charge. Anyone who believes that he, she, or they are experiencing retaliation is strongly encouraged to report this concern using the same procedure for reporting possible sexual misconduct under this policy.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Academic and Financial Support<\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Academic Support<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who are concerned about their classes and academics as a result of sexual misconduct can reach out for general assistance or to request Supportive Measures through CGS, the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office, or the Office of the Dean of Students.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Student Financial Aid and Enrollment<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students may have concerns about financial aid matters, such as how their financial aid might be affected by a reduction in course load.
