In these pages you’ll find abundant information about the UM-Flint English Department.  Our mission is to foster thoughtful and empathetic leaders who understand and use the English language effectively and creatively.   The department is home to undergraduate programs in literature, writing, linguistics, and English education, as well as to the Master of Arts in English Language and Literature.

English is a useful major.  Just take a look here to see what our alumni are doing with their majors. If you don’t have room in your schedule for a major, you might consider one of our wide variety of minors.  Maybe you’ll just take a class or two.  Whatever you decide, you’ll find a dedicated faculty with a shared belief that language is intrinsically fascinating and important. Through its study we hone our ability to ask questions, interpret texts, consider different views, create and debate ideas, and make and communicate well-reasoned arguments.

Do you have a question that isn’t answered on this site?  Get in touch.  Drop by.  Meet with an advisor.  We’re eager to help.

English:  it's fun, it’s practical, and it will take you just as far as you want to go.
