is calculated and offered to your account is important. Your financial aid is based on your Free Application for Student Aid  results as well as your \u201ccost of attendance,\u201d which is estimated based on your tuition and fees, housing, transportation, and other expenses.<br><br>Financial aid programs were created with the idea that the primary responsibility for paying college costs rests with the student and their family. Need-based financial aid is available to families who demonstrate a need for additional resources to help pay college costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light h-auto\" style=\"min-height:50px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#dedfe1\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2 mt-4\">\n\t\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left mb-2\">   The formula used to determine whether a student is eligible for need-based aid is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left mb-2\">  <em>  <strong>Cost of Attendance (Budget)<br>\u2013 <\/strong>Student Aid Index (SAI<strong><br>\u2013<\/strong> Scholarships\/Other Resources (Sponsored Tuition Payments, Book Vouchers, etc.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-row row mb-2\">\n\t\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>= NEED FOR AID<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-6\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">Information on the budget and SAI can be found on the Offer screen on <a href=\"http:\/\/sis.umflint.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Information System (SIS)<\/a> (see Finding the Information You Need on SIS for assistance). Components of the budget can also be seen on the How Much You Will Need to Pay or Borrow section.<br><br>Your financial aid offer is based on the following factors that determine financial need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-2 has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8b9efd45494b3a33aed4afe024c8dd6a\">Cost of Attendance <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">The budget on <a href=\"http:\/\/sis.umflint.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SIS<\/a> represents a reasonable estimate of the cost of attending UM-Flint. Please note, the budget has different amounts for room and board depending whether you live on your own, are living with your parents, or living in student housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1bd64f06508d146025d256eea45f186c\">Student Aid Index <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/what-is-sai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Aid Index<\/a> is an eligibility index number that the financial office will use to determine how much Federal student aid you will be eligible to receive. This number is not a dollar amount of aid eligibility or what you and\/or family is expected to pay to attend. The SAI is calculated using the financial information that you and your contributor(s) provided on your FAFSA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6b6bdfd991f3fc758c5e471f20ce9b2a\"><strong>SAI Formula for Dependent Students:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Parents\u2019 Contribution from Income + Parents\u2019 Contribution from Assets + Student\u2019s Contribution from Income + Student\u2019s Contribution from Assets<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-582f44d5b96cda66ff22f46dab531433\"><strong>SAI Formula for Independent Students:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Student\u2019s Contribution from Income + Student\u2019s Contribution from Assets<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your SAI will be included on your FAFSA Financial Summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b5a03a9968b5dc6b7a140f4ede74e7a3\">Scholarships\/Other Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to seek scholarships from private sources and UM-Flint and utilize other resources such as sponsored tuition payments and veterans\u2019 benefits. Federal regulations and university policies require that these forms of assistance be counted as financial resources when determining eligibility for need based Title IV financial aid, however some federal veteran\u2019s educational benefits are excluded. These scholarships and other resources will first meet any gap between the budget, the SAI, and the financial aid offered. Next, they will reduce the amount of loan or work-study offered.
