There are two primary types of loans: federal and private loans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Federal student loans<\/strong> allow students to borrow at special fixed interest rates and with flexible repayment plans. Such loans include <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/subsidized-unsubsidized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">direct subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans<\/mark><\/a>, which differ by when interest begins to accumulate. To qualify for federal student loans, students must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/mark> <\/a>and meet eligibility requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Private student loans <\/strong>are non-federal, meaning they are made by a bank, credit union, school, or other financial institution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color\">Each type of student loan has different interest rates and grace periods that apply, so it\u2019s essential to review each loan\u2019s specifics carefully. Generally, scholarships are merit-based, but there may be additional criteria.
