noopener\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a>&nbsp;must be on file with the Office of Financial Aid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The FAFSA school code for the University of Michigan-Flint is&nbsp;<strong>002327<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must renew\/file a FAFSA each year and are encouraged to apply early<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The University of Michigan-Flint has a priority deadline of&nbsp;<strong>March 1&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The last day to file a FAFSA for the current year is June 30<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A valid FAFSA needs to be sent to the university while the student is enrolled and eligible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applicants must establish their eligibility to apply for financial aid by meeting several general requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The applicant must be admitted to a degree-granting program*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident or other eligible noncitizen classification&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The applicant must be making satisfactory academic progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An applicant in default on any&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\">Federal Student Loan<\/a>&nbsp;(including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/perkins\">Perkins Loan<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/app\/launchPLUS.action?plusType=parentPlus\">Parent PLUS<\/a>, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/app\/launchPLUS.action?plusType=gradPlus\">Graduate PLUS Loan<\/a>) or who owes a repayment on a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\/pell\">Federal Pell Grant<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\/fseog\">Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant<\/a>, or other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\">Federal Grant<\/a>&nbsp;at any institution is not considered eligible for aid. The applicant must provide proof that the indebtedness and\/or default status has been removed before the applicant can be considered for additional assistance. If an applicant owes any type of past debt to the university, then the applicant must resolve the financial obligation to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two exceptions to the degree-granting program requirement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students who must take certain pre-requisite course work to qualify for admission into a graduate program, may get a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help\/direct-stafford-loans\">Federal Direct Stafford Loan<\/a>&nbsp;for up to 12 consecutive months while completing that preparatory course work. The student must be enrolled at least half-time in approved coursework documented by the program advisor, and must meet the federal student financial aid eligibility requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students enrolled at least half-time in the teacher certification program can potentially be offered Work-Study, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/subsidized-unsubsidized\">Federal Direct Loan<\/a>, or an application can be made by a parent for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/subsidized-unsubsidized\">PLUS Loan<\/a>&nbsp;(dependent students only), while enrolled in that program. Please note that students in the teacher certification program are considered undergraduate students and are subject to undergraduate loan limits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the students responsibility to contact the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/finaid\/contact-us\/\">Office of Financial Aid<\/a>&nbsp;if either of the above situations apply to the student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOTE:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/admissions\/other-students\/guest-students\/\">Guest students<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/admissions\/other-students\/dual-enrollment\/\">dual-enrolled<\/a>&nbsp;students, Genesee Early College students, and students who are non-candidates for degrees are not eligible to receive aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"Requirements\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial Aid requirements are an area in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sis.umflint.edu\/\">Student Information System<\/a>&nbsp;where students may review any outstanding or completed requirements that impact their financial aid.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>The requirements area in SIS may be found by taking the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log-in to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sis.umflint.edu\/\">SIS<\/a>&nbsp;with your uniqname and LAN password<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Financial Aid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Eligibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Financial Aid Requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select Aid Year (drop down list)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Items listed under the unsatisfied requirements area need action by the student. The verification process ensures all financial aid is offered according to federal and state regulations, and MUST be completed before any federal financial aid, including federal student loans, and certain state and institutional aid, can be finalized.<br><br>Federal regulations governing financial aid programs require some students to be verified each year. Just because you have been selected does not mean that you have made a mistake.&nbsp; Verification is a quality-control method to ensure that federal aid is disbursed fairly and accurately and that the student is offered the correct amount of aid. Students are selected for verification by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a>&nbsp;and by schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For your safety and security,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/ppii\">Personal Identifiable Information&nbsp;<\/a>should never be sent via email nor will UM-Flint request it be sent by email. However, there may be a situation where a student may not be able to provide parental information due to no fault of their own. In this case, the otherwise dependent student may be declared independent by the Office of Financial Aid for financial aid purposes.<br><br>All situations will require a Dependency Override form and supporting documentation from various unbiased third parties. Students with such circumstances must contact the Office of Financial Aid. NOTE: requesting a dependency override does not guarantee that it will be approved. The decision of the Office of Financial Aid is final.<br><br>Circumstances that may be eligible for a dependency override:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your custodial parent has died and the other natural parent is still living. However, you have had no contact or support from the living parent for a significant period of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extraordinary family circumstances. The circumstances may be a result of abandonment or where the student\u2019s welfare would be placed in jeopardy if contact is continued.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other unusual circumstances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Circumstances that are not acceptable reasons for a dependency override:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Student is no longer living at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student is living at home (or with relatives) but is paying rent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student has ongoing arguments with parents and due to this the parents have refused to help<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student has elected to put him\/herself through college<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parents have chosen to not provide financial information for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">FAFSA<\/a>&nbsp;OR provide help with the student\u2019s college expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student lives with, or has a step-parent who refuses to provide support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Re-Evaluation of Financial Aid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">FAFSA<\/a>&nbsp;requires tax information from the previous tax year. This does not always reflect the current financial situation of a family. It is important to file the FAFSA with the information as it is listed on the tax return. Then the student should contact the Office of Financial Aid and inquire about a re-evaluation. During the re-evaluation, the Office of Financial Aid has the ability to use their professional judgment in order to alter the FAFSA data to reflect the current situation. DO NOT alter FAFSA data on your own.<br><br>Circumstances that may be eligible for a re-evaluation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Job Loss (Must be out of work for at least 10 weeks)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Job Change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of Untaxed Income or Benefits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Separation\/Divorce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Death of Parent\/Spouse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High Medical\/Dental Expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All situations will require a Re-Evaluation of Financial Circumstances form and supporting documentation. Therefore, the amount of aid that is available for distribution to students during this time depends on how much was distributed during the fall and winter semesters. During the appointment, students should be prepared to document school\/college approval, costs, possible funding, and a timeline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umflint.edu\/cge\">Center for Global Engagement<\/a>&nbsp;offers study abroad scholarships for faculty-led and external global programs. These scholarships are offered each year and the application deadline is typically in early January.
