Meet our Amazing Ambassadors!

The Office of Graduate Programs employs a number of current graduate students to serve as Graduate Student Ambassadors (GSAs). Why UM-Flint? I love the city of Flint. I grew up in the greater Flint area, and I have great memories of going to the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint Children’s Museum, the Sloan Museum, and the “Back to the Bricks” annual car cruise. When I toured UM-Flint, I felt very welcomed by the staff, everyone was extremely pleasant and helpful.
What are some of the best qualities of your program? The faculty and students are the best quality of the OTD program. The faculty will challenge you to become the best student you can, as well as provide the support that you need. All of us students in the program have very high aspirations for ourselves, as well as one another. Between the faculty and ourselves, we help push each other every day so that we can help make the UM-Flint OTD program one of the top OT programs in the nation.

Why UM-Flint? I grew up in Flint and was comfortable with the campus. I also knew that the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine take a great deal of pride in their medical programs. I knew that, although PA was a new program, it would be constructed so that it will be a successful program. I was and still am confident in the university, the curriculum, and my ability to succeed with the education I am receiving here.
What are some of the best qualities of your program? The faculty is amazing. They’re all extremely knowledgeable and have years of clinical experience in various backgrounds. Our program also has students from a variety of backgrounds, which allows different students to show their talents during different modules. Finally, the program offers early and frequent clinical experiences so I feel our cohort will be better prepared for our clinical rotations and even starting careers post-graduation.

Kayla D.

Occupational Therapy (OTD)
Educational Background: BS in Clinical Exercise Science from Grand Valley State University
Why UM-Flint? At first, I was hesitant to apply to the University of Michigan- Flint’s OTD program due to the prerequisites required. I decided to apply because a student ambassador reached out to me via email and offered some assistance in the application process.  She encouraged me to apply although not all the prerequisites were completed, and I was accepted a month later.  I accepted the position in the OTD program and received guidance for completing required prerequisites.
What are some of the best qualities of your program? I admire that the faculty is so open to suggestions, frequently checks in with students, and provides an abundance of resources for us to utilize.  Faculty is also very open to extending deadlines if needed, which has happened a few times since I’ve started.  In addition, I value the knowledge professors share with us by providing guest speakers, collaboration efforts between other professions, and providing real life examples of evaluations & interventions for our program.

Program: Physical Therapy (DPT)
Educational Background: BS in Kinesiology from Michigan State University.
Why UM-Flint? I selected UM-Flint because they offered a well rounded DPT program with a competitive tuition cost. The vast array of clinical locations, the outreach done by faculty and students, and the smaller cohort size made me want to come here. Also having the opportunity to get involved with the community through PT Heart, and to be involved in research, were very appealing to me.
What are some of the best qualities of the DPT program? As a DPT student, I have always felt that the professors really want you to succeed. There is a positive learning environment in the classroom, and I feel comfortable reaching out for help. It is also great to have clinical experience through our rotations set up throughout the program, as well as through volunteer work at PT Heart. I feel like I have made great relationships with my classmates, as we all want each other to thrive and be the best PTs possible!

Computer Science & Information Systems (MS)
Educational Background: BA in Anthropology from the University of Michigan – Flint.
Why UM-Flint? As an alumnus I already knew all the amazing benefits that come along with attending classes at the University of Michigan-Flint campus: great professors, small class sizes, a large assortment of clubs and organizations, a huge library, community outreach, research opportunities and an abundance of other resources.  The ability to access so many learning communities and resources from both the Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses added even more to the vast resources available to me when I chose University of Michigan-Flint; including MIDAS, Michigan Online, MICDE, and CEW+ just to name a few. The amazing downtown Flint location is another wonderful bonus. Flint’s community is like no other you will encounter, filled with friendly faces, engaging spaces, and a variety of activities to keep you busy.  Finally, one of the main reasons why I chose the University of Michigan-Flint is the Fast Track Option in Computer Science that allowed me to apply to the master’s degree program despite coming from another field, opening a whole new world to me.
What are some of the best qualities of your program? The dedicated professors are honestly the best quality of the Computer Science program. The professors go above and beyond for their students to help them understand the material and succeed not only in the classroom but in their preparation for the job market. The variety of customizations that are offered within the program allow students to shape the curriculum to their learning needs and career goals. Students select between a concentration in Computer Science or one in Information Systems and then a thesis or non-thesis track offering students a variety of ways to complete the degree requirements.   Another great quality, beyond a thesis, is the ability to find additional research opportunities, on campus through independent research courses, internships, or research assistantship positions in the department and many others.  The University of Michigan-Flint has everything you need to succeed in your education and future career.

Why UM-Flint? The campus culture at UM-Flint is very encouraging and embracing of graduate students and the faculty is always open to provide learning opportunities, feedback, and support. Being part of the university advances the option for research, professional development, and community outreach for all graduate students in the school.
