Communities across the nation are facing a growing shortage of primary care physicians at the very moment demand for primary care is rising.  Driven by longer lifespans, higher rates of chronic disease, and an aging population that needs continuous, relationship-based care, the gap between the population’s needs and the available care is widening. Patients are waiting longer for appointments, preventive care is delayed, chronic conditions are being managed too late, and too many people are falling through the cracks of a complex health system.

The University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing’s Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program is designed for this moment. AGPCNPs are expertly prepared to provide comprehensive primary care for adolescents, adults, and older adults.  Graduates are delivering health promotion and disease prevention, diagnosing and managing acute and chronic conditions, coordinating care across specialties, and helping patients navigate real-world barriers that affect health. With a holistic nursing foundation and advanced clinical training, AGPCNPs are uniquely positioned to expand access, strengthen continuity of care, and improve outcomes where the need is greatest.

At UM-Flint, the AGPCNP program develops clinicians ready to lead on the front lines of primary care from adolescence to end-of-life.  With a University of Michigan degree behind them, UM-Flint AGPCNPs are closing care gaps, supporting healthier aging, and bringing high-quality, patient-centered care to the individuals and communities who depend on it most.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Family Nurse Practitioners act as the primary health care professionals to individuals, families, and groups. FNPs provide management of acute and chronic disease and emphasize health promotion and disease prevention across their patient’s lifespan. Graduates are qualified to sit for the Family Nurse Practitioner Board Certification Examination.

The curriculum for the FNP concentration consists of 52 credits of core courses for the MSN and 70 credits for the MSN combined with DNP.

Graduates are eligible to sit for the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination and are equipped to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based care to critically ill neonates and infants across diverse healthcare settings.

The curriculum integrates advanced didactic content with immersive clinical experiences in high-risk obstetrics, labor and delivery, neonatal consultation, NICU, pediatric cardiac and intensive care units, and multidisciplinary follow-up clinics, ensuring development of broad clinical expertise.

The program features a flexible, primarily online format with part-time and full-time options. On-campus sessions support hands-on skills training, and all clinical experiences are completed in person under the guidance of experienced, credentialed faculty.
