Scholarships and Research Assistantships for Mathematics

At the University of Michigan-Flint, we want you to focus on starting your university experience strong. That’s why we offer scholarships and research assistantships to new Mathematics (MA) students.


The Dean's Distinguished Graduate Student Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded competitively to new students who have achieved and have the potential to achieve a high level of academic success. No additional application is required. The number of awards is limited.


  • Must be a newly admitted, first-time graduate student to the UM-Flint Mathematics (MA) program for Winter 2018
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale)
  • Half-time enrollment (4 or more credits) in each semester awarded
  • Each award is $3000, split into two $1500 payments 
  • Scholarships applied directly to student's account for tuition, mandatory fees, and course-related fees only; not refundable for any other expenses

Research Assistantships

A Graduate Student Research Assistantship (GSRA) is a paid position for academically-related research activities of UM-Flint graduate students. Selected new Mathematics students will be offered an appointment for two semesters to assist UM-Flint faculty performing academic research. No additional application is required. The number of appointments is limited.


  • Must be a newly admitted, first-time graduate student to the UM-Flint Mathematics (MA) program for Winter 2018
  • A minimum of 6 credits of enrollment is required for each semester awarded
  • Students are paid on a monthly basis; current stipend rate is $2098.65 per semester (minimum total award of $4197.30 for two semesters)
  • Each appointment will be two semesters
