Welcome to Physics and Astronomy at the University of Michigan-Flint

The mission of the physics programs and faculty, including integrated programs within CAS, is to prepare students to succeed in their chosen careers after graduation from the University of Michigan-Flint. Recognizing that students will elect many career paths, ranging from elementary teaching, to industry, to graduate education, and others, the department believes its mission is to help students gain a knowledge foundation based upon fundamental principles of classical and modern physics.

This foundation stresses the creative application of physics principles to solving newly posed problems and creative thinking. Students should develop the ability to apply these principles to real problems ranging from the very practical for the future elementary teacher, to the mathematical and abstract for the future graduate student. Students should improve in their ability to abstract a problem to its essentials, design and develop experiments to test hypothesis, and correctly interpret the results of an experiment.

Physics Faculty Granted Hubble Telescope Access for Research

Dr. Rajib Ganguly, Associate Chair of UM-Flint Physics and Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences, Engineering and Physics, will claim 19 of the Hubble Telescope’s orbits during the next year. Dr. Ganguly is known for his research on quasars.

Q & A: UM-Flint Physics Faculty Discuss Impact of Gravitational Wave Discovery on Their Research

UM-Flint physics faculty members Rajib Ganguly, PhD and James Alsup, PhD answer questions about the discovery of gravitational waves. Both Ganguly and Alsup have focused their research on black holes and rely heavily on Einstein's general theory of relativity, which predicted the existence of gravitational waves. Here, the professors offer an overview of the discovery, their initial reactions, and its implications.

Generous Gift Allows Creation of Second Active Learning Classroom

In a ceremony held on Friday, December 4, 2015, plans were announced to create the DeGraaf Active Learning Classroom at UM-Flint. The classroom, made possible by a generous gift from David and Francine Zick, will be named in honor of Dr. Donald DeGraaf, a founding member of the UM-Flint Physics department who taught here from 1956 until 1990.
