For Mar Nature Preserve

500+ children experienced a memorable field trip to For Mar Nature Preserve's "Bio Blitz" celebration on Friday, September 28, 2018!  Students were engaged in various activites such as nature hikes, experiences with live animals, visits with a DNR officer, water studies, and creating a make-and-take pumpkin life cycle project with the Pop-Up School.

Gift Book Distribution

The UM-Flint Pop-Up School appreciates the families that take the time to participate with our program.  At many of our events, beautiful hard cover books are given away to each child who spends time learning through our play-based activities.

Flint Farmer's Market

Families enjoyed the beautiful music, delicious smells, tasty treats, and family interaction at the Hispanic Festival on Friday, September 14, 2018.  Children visiting the Pop-Up School created beautiful Ojo de Dios (God's Eye) projects.

WIC Burton

The month of August was extremely busy at the WIC Center in Burton.  Children enjoyed all sorts of activites as they waited patiently for their appointments.  

For Mar Nature Preserve

Children and their families enjoyed a beautiful summer day at For Mar Nature Preserve on Saturday, August 11, 2018.  To celebrate the Monarch Festival, sensory butterflys were created using pom poms and foam shapes.

HAP Health Fair

This year's annual HAP Health Fair on Saturday, August 4, 2018, was a great success.  Families that visited the Pop-Up tent received a take home Pop-Up canvas bag with a hardcover book of their choice and a color mixing sensory bag.

Applewood

The topic of Applewood's story time on Friday, August 3, 2018, was color mixing.  The book, Mouse Paint, was used to introduce the process of taking the primary colors red, blue, and yellow, and creating the secondary colors green, orange, and purple.  Children practiced this process at the Pop-Up School by squeezing a sealed baggie filled with tempera paint and shaving cream. 

Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village

We finished up summer camp at the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village with units on animals at the zoo and superheros.  Everyone had a great time and created animal keychins to help them remember the wonderful experience they had this summer.

YWCA

Applewood

Applewood's annual Savor the Flavor event on Thursday, July 19, 2018, had a huge turnout!  Children enjoyed making citrus prints with lemons, limes, and oranges and went away with citrus scented pieces of artwork.

Fairhaven Health Fair

Bounce houses, face painting, and food, oh my!  Everyone had a great time at the Fairhaven Health Fair on Thursday, July 19, 2018.

Flint Farmer's Market

On Saturday, July 7, 2108, families played with orange scented playdough, created milk fireworks, and rainbows at the Flint Farmer's Market.

Children had a great time making rainbow streamers and milk fireworks at Applewood on Friday, July 6, 2018, after listening to the story, The Crayon Box that Talked, during story time.

Community Resource Fair - Carriage Town

Applewood

The weather was interesting during the 2018 opening days of Applewood.  On Wednesday, May 3, 2018, we had torents of rain, on Thursday, May 4, 2018, Applewood closed early due to strong winds, but Saturday, May 5, 2018, was sunny and beautiful.  Just in time to celebrate Cinco De Mayo with maracas.

Flint Public Library

The theme today was, "Things that Fly."  Children visiting the Flint Public Library on Thursday, April 12, 2018, had the opportunity to create and fly many airborne toys.  Pinwheel spiners were dropped off the staircase, straw circle flyers flew by the circulation desk, blast off rockets shot into the air, and bird kites zoomed between the aisle ways all with permission from the freindly librarians and parental supervision.

K-PS2-2 Analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.

Flint Odyssey House

The challenge:  How can I balance this paper robot on my finger?  The answer:  Experiment with the placement of pennies taped to the robot's hands.  This is what the children at the Flint Odyssey House spent time solving on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

Calvary United Methodist Church

On Wednesday, April 4, 2018, children at Calvary United Methodist Church completed a series of health lessons this semester presented by students from the UM-Flint School of Nursing.  The final lesson on Nutrition , was celebrated with a fun version of everyones favorie game Jeopardy.

Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village

Children had the opportunity to design their own bird nests using a variety of materials at the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
 
K-ESS2-2 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.

1-LS1-2 Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive. 

3-LS4-4 Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change. 

3-LS4-2 Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.

 

 

Calvary United Methodist Church

Students from the UM-Flint School of Nursing have been sharing health lessons with the kids at Calvary United Methodist Church throughout the month of March.  Physical Fitness, Personal Hygiene, Germs, and Nutrition lessons were taught through play based activites such as the model of the germ seen in the picture.

3-CC.1.1 Explain the benefits of healthy eating and being physically active. 

3-CC.1.2 Describe the importance of choosing a variety of ways to be physically active. 

3-CC.5.1 Explain the physical, emotional, and social importance of keeping the body clean.

Carriage Town

Positional words such as inside, outside, top, & bottom were used to describe where family members were in relation to the beautiful building built by children at Carriage Town on Monday, March 19, 2018.

Flint & Genesee Literacy Network

On Friday, February 16, 2018, the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network held their PACT event at the Flint School of Performing Arts.  This year's theme, "Love is a Family Affair," was a great success.  The Pop-Up School focused on Dental Health Awareness month with a series of dental health inspired activities including tooth hand puppets, write and wipe teeth, and toothbrush timers.  Students from the UM-Flint School of Nursing shared invaluable information about the importance of dental health and oral hygiene.
