April 26, 2020 Commencement Ceremony
The University will hold two commencement ceremonies, the first at 10:00 AM and the second at 3:00 PM.  Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two hours. Tickets are NOT needed for the ceremony. Due to latex allergies, no balloons allowed in the arena.

10:00 AM Ceremony (Please report at least one hour prior to the start of your ceremony)

Graduate students from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies

3:00 PM Ceremony (Please report at least one hour prior to the start of your ceremony)
Undergraduate and Graduate students from the School of Management
Undergraduate and Graduate students from the College of Health Sciences
Undergraduate and Graduate students from the School of Nursing

The Spring 2020 commencement exercises will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the Dort Federal Event Center, located at 3501 Lapeer Rd, Flint, MI  48503.  For driving directions, click here

RSVP for Commencement
RSVP for April 2020 will be open from March 23rd-April 22nd. Please note: This is NOT the same as applying to graduate.

Special Accommodations:
If you or your guests require special accommodations due to physical limitations, you may contact the Disabilities Support Coordinator, Chip Evans at 810-762-3081 or Sign language interpreters will be present for those with hearing impairments. Personnel will be available to direct and assist individuals with disabilities.

Grad Fair 2020:
The Graduation Fair will be held in the University of Michigan-Flint Bookstore, March 24th - March 25th from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.  The Bookstore is located on the first floor of the University Pavilion (106 UPAV).  You may contact the Bookstore at 810-762-3030.

  • Join the U-M Alumni Association – UM-Flint grads automatically receive a free one-year membership upon graduation 

Cap and Gown:
All degree candidates who participate in the commencement ceremony must wear appropriate academic attire. Caps and gowns are available for purchase at the University Pavilion Bookstore any business day prior to the ceremony. To avoid any difficulty obtaining your correct size in cap and gown, attire should be picked up from the Bookstore as soon as possible. For more information visit the bookstore website here

Bachelor Unit $52.50 (Cap, gold tassel, bachelor gown)
Master Unit $95.55 (Cap, tassel, master gown and hood)
Specialist Unit $97.50 (Cap, tassel, master gown, specialist hood)
Doctoral Unit $163.50 (Tam, black tassel, doctoral gown and hood)


Parking is available for $5.00 per vehicle in the surface lots surrounding the Dort Federal Event Center. One free parking pass will be given to all pre-registered participants. You may pick up your parking pass in the Registrar's Office during normal business hours. Any additional vehicles in a graduate's guest party will be required to pay Dort Federal Event Center $5.00 at the gate. (Lost, misplaced, or stolen passes will not be replaced.)

Please note: Traffic backups are common in the hour before the ceremony. We recommend graduates and guests arrive early. Carpooling is strongly recommended due to limited spaces.

Assembly for Graduates
CHECK-IN: Graduates participating in the ceremony should report immediately upon arrival to the lower level of the Dort Federal Event Center. There will be registration tables to assist you.

  • 10:00 a.m. Ceremony:  Check in will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  You must check in before 9:30 a.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. Ceremony:  Check in will be held from 1:30  p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  You must check in before 2:30 p.m.

Only graduates and authorized personnel are allowed in the lower level of the Arena. Please make arrangements with family and friends to meet in a designated area after the ceremony.

Personal belongings (purses, backpacks, etc) are not appropriate with ceremonial dress. Please make arrangements for storing personal items with family or friends before reporting to the registration area because there is no secure storage inside the Dort Federal Event Center.

Upon check-in each graduate will receive a name card. Take this card with you on stage for the Marshall to read. If necessary, please indicate the phonetic pronunciation of your name to assist the Marshall. Your card contains a number that indicates your place in the line of march. You must line up according to this number. The line of march must be organized and orderly to facilitate the timely beginning of the ceremony.
