To help determine non-attendance, it is recommended that students have at least one assignment submitted before the deadline, particularly in online asynchronous courses that do not have scheduled class meetings. This could include something as simple as a discussion board post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-x-large-font-size wp-elements-39a431f8243d86e7df6a8d1f1ce59880\">What Counts as Attendance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to comply with federal Title IV and Veterans Affairs regulations, the University of Michigan-Flint must demonstrate that students receiving federal aid have established eligibility by participating in academically related activities for all enrolled coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal definitions come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-34\/subtitle-B\/chapter-VI\/part-600\/subpart-A\/section-600.2\">34 C.F.R. \u00a7 600.2<\/a> (\u201cacademic engagement\u201d) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-34\/subtitle-B\/chapter-VI\/part-668\/subpart-B\/section-668.22\">34 C.F.R. \u00a7 668.22<\/a> (\u201cacademically related activity\u201d). Institutions must be able to document student participation through systems such as Canvas, instructor records, email logs, or other official documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">What Counts as an Academically Related Activity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student is considered to have attended or participated in a course if they engage in <strong>any<\/strong> institutionally documented academic activity, including but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physically attending a synchronous class, lecture, recitation, or laboratory session (in person or online) where interaction with the instructor is possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submitting an academic assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing an assessment, exam, quiz, interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instructional activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participating in an assigned study group (assigned or documented by the instructor\/institution)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contributing to an online discussion related to the academic subject of the course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initiating contact with the instructor to ask a question about the academic subject<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>: For online\/distance education students, \u201cattendance\u201d refers to <strong>academic engagement<\/strong>. Does <em>Not<\/em> Count as Attendance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These activities <strong>cannot<\/strong> be used to establish attendance under federal regulations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Activity<\/th><th>Counts as Attendance?<\/th><th>Notes<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Logging into Canvas without doing anything<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>Federal rules explicitly forbid using login activity as proof of attendance.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Opening course materials without submitting work<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>\u201cPassive activity\u201d is not academically related.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Submitting non-academic communication (e.g., \u201cI\u2019m having trouble logging in\u201d)<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>Must relate directly to academic content.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Being present on the roster but never engaging<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>Enrollment does not equal attendance.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Attending an orientation not required for the specific course<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>Must be course-specific.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Viewing a lecture video without submitting related work<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>LMS analytics alone are insufficient.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Accessing publisher or external tools without recorded activity<\/td><td><strong>NO<\/strong><\/td><td>Must show actual engagement with assignments.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">How to drop students for non-attendance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Faculty Drop Roster function in SIS allows faculty to drop students for non-attendance within a specified period of time for each part of term (typically between the first day and the add deadline).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It provides a roster of students enrolled in your section along with the dates of when that section is open for dropping students who have never attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following steps will help you navigate through the process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.umflint.edu\/sis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Login to SIS<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type your uniqname and LAN Password in spaces provided and click Login.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the<strong>&nbsp;Faculty &amp; Staff&nbsp;<\/strong>menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the Faculty &amp; Staff menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Courses<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From Courses, select&nbsp;<strong>Faculty Drop Roster<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a semester from the drop down menu at the top of the screen (by default, all terms are listed).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Status column is where you will see which class rosters are either \u201cNow\u201d, \u201cExpired\u201d or \u201cFuture\u201d.&nbsp; \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expired<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; it\u2019s passed the deadline, and you can no longer drop students for non attendance from that section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Now&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 the class has begun, and you can drop students for non-attendance.&nbsp; The dates within the Available column will indicate the dates in which it\u2019s available to you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the section hasn\u2019t begun yet, and you can see in the available column when it will open.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Available column indicates the dates during which the roster is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To drop a student for non-attendance:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click anywhere within the blank area of a row in which the status indicates class is open (Now) for dropping.&nbsp; Roster will then open.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the top of the Roster is the Course Information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the bottom is the list of names of all students registered for that section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the student(s) you need to drop for non-attendance, select the checkbox in front of the student\u2019s name, and select the \u201cFaculty Only Non-Attendance\u201d from the dropdown titled \u201cAction\u201d across from the student\u2019s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Last Attended Date<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Leave blank \u2013 no need to enter one since you are only dropping students who never attended.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you are done dropping all the students you need to from the roster, then select Submit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students will receive an email notification after you have dropped them from the section.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the drop is submitted, it\u2019s processed immediately and can\u2019t be undone using SIS.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>If a mistake has occurred, or you are allowing the student back into your class (you feel they can still successfully complete) and it\u2019s prior to the add deadline for that part of term, you may email the Registrar\u2019s Office at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:Flint.Registrar.Support@umich.edu\"><strong>Flint.Registrar.Support@umich.edu<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>to request the student be registered back into the class. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe id=\"kaltura_player\" src='https:\/\/cdnapisec.kaltura.com\/p\/1038472\/embedPlaykitJs\/uiconf_id\/54883762?iframeembed=true&amp;entry_id=1_fi7l5vh6&amp;config%5Bprovider%5D=%7B%22widgetId%22%3A%221_wbvbkeiv%22%7D&amp;config%5Bplayback%5D=%7B%22startTime%22%3A0%7D'  style=\"width: 960px;height: 540px;border: 0;\" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozAllowFullScreen allow=\"autoplay *;
