class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bryer Foundation Medical Research Fund focuses on encouraging and supporting the medical research endeavors of the University of Michigan-Flint faculty. This research fund honors the accomplishments of Ben Bryer, surgeon, scientist, educator, author, and humanist, in his pursuit of medical knowledge. All instructional faculty may apply and applications are evaluated by faculty peers. The key evaluation criteria are scholarly merit, research related to medical and biomedical research, in the areas of disease prevention and control, and especially cancer research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Eligibility Information: <\/strong>The Principal Investigator must be a faculty member in one of the five schools and colleges of UM-Flint, and may only participate in two active RCA simultaneously (one as a PI and one as a Co-PI). <br>Preference will be given to early career <a href=\"https:\/\/orsp.umich.edu\/project-lifecycle\/develop-proposal\/principal-investigator\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PI-eligible faculty<\/a> . Applications are evaluated by anonymous subject matter experts across U-M. Proposed project start dates should allow enough lead time for the review process (8-10 weeks in review) and sufficient time for post-award startup and administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Estimated Number of Awards: <\/strong>Two to three health-related projects per fiscal year<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peer Review Process: <\/strong> Bryer proposals are evaluated through peer review across U-M. The UM-Flint Office of Research uses the university\u2019s competition space, <a href=\"https:\/\/umflint.infoready4.com\/\">InfoReady<\/a>, to invite U-M faculty (across all three campuses) to evaluate submissions anonymously. Subject matter expert feedback (much like the peer review publication process) is the main source of feedback. Applicants may recommend independent peer reviewers during the application process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deadlines: <\/strong>The funding is available on a rolling basis. There are no fixed submission deadlines. Since 2021, submissions have been received at the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1-June 30) until the funding is fully subscribed. Applicants will generally receive notification of the funding decisions within 8-10 weeks of their submission date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Application materials must be submitted using the <a href=\"https:\/\/umflint.infoready4.com\/#research\">UM-Flint InfoReady Review portal<\/a>, which allows for electronic submission of proposal documents and online approvals from the Department Chair and Dean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Requirements:<\/strong> RCA proposal narratives are limited to 3 single-spaced pages<strong> <\/strong>(with text no smaller than 11-point Arial and margins of at least one inch). Budget documents should be one page in length. Budget justifications (explaining the expenses proposed and the basis for the cost estimates) are limited to one page. Biographical sketches or abbreviated curriculum vitae must follow NIH, NSF or NEH submission criteria. See <a href=\"https:\/\/orsp.umich.edu\/develop-proposal\/biosketch\">Biosketch<\/a> for a discussion of ways to highlight your expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Proposal Narrative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal narrative must be <em>paginated <\/em>and include the following sections. The Bryer evaluation criteria have been simplified to correspond with recent changes in federal review guidelines (see NIH simplified guidelines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Project Narrative (Three pages)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are pursuing health-related research, organizational studies, marketing, humanities and arts research, please use the following section headings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Importance of the Research (Significance and Innovation)<\/strong>: Tell the reader why the research is important and identify the key research questions the project will address. For humanities and arts disciplines, describe how the research will fill essential gaps in the body of disciplinary knowledge or artistic expression and its unique contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rigor and Feasibility (Approach): <\/strong>Provide an overview of the objectives and timeline of the project. This section should convey enough \u201cstep-by-step\u201d detail to convince peer reviewers of the merits of the approach but stay broad enough to explain the approach to non-specialists. This section is written with comprehensive paragraphs to illustrate <em>how <\/em>each definable objective will be achieved and measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Future Plans<\/strong>: Explain how your proposed project fits into your larger research agenda and discuss plans for obtaining external funding. Where applicable, provide information on potential external funding opportunities and targeted submission dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">References and other supporting materials (survey questionnaires, etc.) are excluded from the proposal narrative page limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Budget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Single investigator<\/strong>: <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Project budget requests are limited to no more than $20,000. The UM-Flint Office of Research will only fund requests that reflect reasonable and necessary costs to achieve project objectives. Based on scholarly merit, the practicality of the request, and available funds, the Office of Research may offer less than the originally requested amount<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Collaborative:<\/strong> Joint funding requests involving two or more faculty can request up to $30,000. Joint funding requests will be evaluated with the collaborative and integrative nature of the research, as an additional criterion, to the standard evaluation criteria of significance, innovation and approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provide a descriptive Budget Narrative that explains each of the following categories as included in the project budget request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Principal Investigator and Co-PI Compensation<\/strong>: Principal investigators and co-investigators must be UM-Flint faculty. Personnel descriptions should include their project role. Salary rates can be confirmed with the Office of Research or your departmental office.<br><br>Re-assigned time requests (fall or winter semesters): RCA funds generally provide enough funding to include a single three-credit course release for a university year (9-month) or 12-month faculty. For 9-month faculty, this is typically 11% effort, or one-ninth of your effort during a given academic year (fall and winter terms), plus benefits. For 12-month faculty, please contact the Office of Research to estimate the cost of a single course release in your proposed budget.<br><br>Summer effort: Nine-month appointed faculty may request up to a maximum of $6,500 plus benefits. PI and\/or Co-PI cannot receive summer research effort during periods when they are also teaching.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Assistance: <\/strong>Whenever possible, students on the UM-Flint campus are expected to benefit from RCA funds by being hired as research assistants. Services purchased from off-campus must be carefully explained in the budget narrative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FICA and Fringe Benefits<\/strong>: Applicants should factor FICA and fringe benefits into their requests. <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><strong>FICA:<\/strong> Students working during fall and winter semesters: UM-Flint undergraduate students are exempt from FICA if they are enrolled for six or more credit hours during the semester in which they work. <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li>UM-Flint graduate students are exempt from FICA if they are enrolled for four or more credit hours during the semester in which they work.<\/li> <li>Students working during the summer semesters: UM-Flint undergraduate students are exempt from FICA if they are enrolled for three or more credit hours during the semester in which they work. UM-Flint graduate students are exempt from FICA if they are enrolled for two or more credit hours during the semester in which they work.<\/li> <li>*The only exception to the above is that all graduate students working on their theses and graduating seniors will be exempt from FICA tax withholding during the terms in which they are enrolled for one or more credit hours.<\/li> <li>Non-students: Non-student employees are not exempt from FICA and require a payment of FICA in addition to the hourly wage they will earn. FICA is calculated at the rate of 7.65% (.0765 x hourly wage).<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Fringe Benefits:<\/strong> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><em>Re-assigned time requests<\/em>: If a re-assigned time (rather than summer salary) is being requested (e.g. during the nine month academic year), the average cost of fringe benefits for faculty\/staff can be estimated to be 30% (0.3) of the annual salary. Please contact the Office of Research for more precise estimates of benefit costs.<\/li> <li><em>Summer (up to $8,000) pay requests<\/em>: Because the university covers <em>health insurance <\/em>costs for faculty\/staff throughout the year, these costs are calculated proportionally into fringe benefits. Be sure to include any shipping charges. Demonstrate that equipment requested is not available for use from any other source (e.g. a nearby campus, other department, etc.). Ordinary office equipment, including desktop computers, is NOT eligible. In rare cases, funds may be requested for highly specialized computer hardware\/software. On completion of the project, all equipment becomes the property of the department of the university.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Travel and Subsistence<\/strong> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Travel to conduct research, to performance sites, etc.<\/strong> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Grants may include costs of travel to research\/performance sites, field work, etc. Cost estimates should include number of travel days, destinations, travel mode, etc. Two airfare estimates are required. The current university mileage reimbursement rate applies.
