Crime Victim Compensation

The Crime Victims Compensation Act-PA 223 of 1976 (M.C.L. 18.351) created the Crime Victims Compensation Board to provide reimbursement expenses to innocent crime victims who suffer personal injury. Michigan became the 17th state to offer this program. The act was amended six times between 1985 and 1996 to expand basic program eligibility and coverage for victims. Crime Victim Services can provide innocent victims and their families with up to $25,000 in financial assistance for expenses accrued as a result of a violent crime.

Across the country, crime victims and other concerned citizens are using VINE for access to timely and reliable information about criminal cases, and the custody status of offenders 24 hours a day,

Over the telephone, through the Internet, or by email.

VINE, which stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday,

Was created in 1994 in response to the death of Mary Byron. Mary and her family were assured that they would be notified when her attacker, a former boyfriend, was released from custody. Notification was not made, and Mary was assaulted and murdered without warning. Unfortunately Mary’s story is not unique.

VINE is a system designed to help prevent cases like these,

Communicating with jail and prison booking systems in near real-time, VINE provides the general public with timely access to offender data.

Users can register to be notified in the event of change in the offender’s status, such as release, transfer, or escape.

When a notification is triggered, VINE automatically attempts to notify victims,

By calling the phone number or numbers the victim has provided, and continues calling for a designated period of time or until a confidential 4 digit PIN is entered.

Victims can also choose to be notified by email, fax, letters, or TTY.

VINE is free to the public and can be accessed by calling a local toll free number, or online at www.vinelink.com

Anytime, day or night.

To date, more than two thirds of the nation use the patented VINE system to keep victims informed about offenders custody status.

These communities are connected through the Appriss Data Network, the nation’s largest integrated criminal justice sharing database.

VINE provides a life-saving service to victims at no cost,

Saves money by eliminating the need to manually notify victims,

Is backed by around the clock support through live operators and technicians,

Gives peace-of-mind and empowerment to victims,

Is a proven solution for victim information and notification.

Put the power of VINE to work for you.
