wp-elements-0f12e363726e690461706c842aca7b80\">Stalking Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stalking is a prevalent crime, including on university campuses\u2026and most victims know their stalkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 46 percent of stalking victims experience at least one unwanted contact per week and nearly three in four victims know their offender. Stalking impacts 6.6-7.5 million people a year in the U.S., where one in seven women and one in 18 men are targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5d9fa012b57aa5a20c0db91d84b8b8be\">Stalking is a Crime<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Michigan, stalking is defined as a \u201cwillful course of conduct involving repeated or continuing harassment of another individual that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, and\/or harassed.\u201d Stalking is any unwanted contact between a stalker and their target that directly or indirectly communicates a threat or places the victim in fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">Some stalking behaviors include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>repeated and unwanted contact by phone, text, or social media;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>following a person or showing up unexpectedly at locations; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leaving gifts for their target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of behaviors are unacceptable and illegal; therefore they should be taken seriously and reported.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\" style=\"min-height:50px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-white-background-color has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2\">\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-416efb457e67605de2021ae84b2f6fde\">Sexual Assault Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexual assault will not be tolerated at the University of Michigan-Flint. Consent must be voluntarily given and cannot be obtained through coercion or force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">Additionally, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, consent doesn\u2019t have to be verbal, but verbally agreeing to different sexual activities can help both you and your partner respect each other\u2019s boundaries. It\u2019s important to recognize that consent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is about communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should be given every time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can be withdrawn at any time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-2 has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3b28b32d08b0e643586838c278084f97\"><strong>Positive consent can look like this:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communicating when you change the type or degree of sexual activity with phrases like \u201cIs this OK?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explicitly agreeing to certain activities, either by saying \u201cyes\u201d or another affirmative statement, like \u201cI\u2019m open to trying.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using physical cues to let the other person know you\u2019re comfortable taking things to the next level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-a838bed6e24810d6d26da78f117249e2\"><strong>Consent does NOT look like this:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refusing to acknowledge \u201cno.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assuming that wearing certain clothes, flirting or kissing is an invitation for anything more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being under the legal age of consent, as defined by the state.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being incapacitated because of drugs or alcohol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressuring someone into sexual activity by using fear or intimidation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assuming you have permission to engage in a sexual act because you\u2019ve done it in the past.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\" style=\"min-height:50px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-white-background-color has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2\">\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0b4e597a74929e5c982e891b6c902463\">Protecting Yourself in Social Situations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">While the responsibility and blame for sexual assault lie squarely with the perpetrator, there are proactive steps you can take to protect yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Socialize with people you trust.<\/strong> Agree to watch out for each other and plan ahead how you\u2019re getting home. If your plans change, make sure to tell the other people in your group. Don\u2019t leave someone stranded in an unfamiliar or unsafe situation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Know your limits.<\/strong> According to the National Institute of Justice, alcohol is the substance most frequently used to facilitate sexual assault. As such, it\u2019s important to know your limits. Keep track of how many drinks you\u2019ve had. Also be aware of your friends\u2019 behaviors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protect your drink.<\/strong> Don\u2019t leave your drink unattended. If you go to the bathroom or step outside, take the drink with you or throw it away. Drink only from containers that were given to you unopened or drinks you watched being made and poured. Perpetrators of drug-facilitated sexual assault may use substances that have no color, taste or odor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It\u2019s okay to leave.<\/strong> You are never obligated to remain in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, pressured or threatened. Excuse yourself from these situations. Potential excuses include: needing to take care of another friend or family member, an urgent <strong>phone call, not feeling well or having to be somewhere by a certain time.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be a good friend.<\/strong> Trust your instincts and stick together. Report it immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be mindful of where your personal information may be publicly available. Consider removing or shielding your private information on social media sites and the U-M online directory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disengage &#8211; do not meet, respond to, or contact your stalker in any way, including through other people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let others know about the stalking behavior: friends, family, co-workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document all contact or stalking activity in a log. Record the date, time, location, and details of what happened, include a description of incident and any witnesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preserve all evidence of activity such as saving emails, text, or screen shots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\" style=\"min-height:50px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-white-background-color has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\"><div class=\"wp-bootstrap-blocks-container container mb-2\">\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-275ac13ea0d4781fda880a82af8c774e\">How to be a Proactive Bystander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mb-2\">When bystanders take action, sexual assault may be prevented. The U-M\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sapac.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center<\/a> lists \u201cThe Four D\u2019s,\u201d or strategies for bystander intervention if you notice a situation and interpret it as problematic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Direct<\/strong>: directly intervene<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Distract<\/strong>: distract either party<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delegate<\/strong>: get help from others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delay<\/strong>: continue to check in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The key message: If you see something, say something.
