Facilitating Literacy Skills & Confidence for All Children

The University of Michigan-Flint Reading Center and Writing Camp, also known as the Summer Literacy Camp, provides a unique opportunity for K-12 students to receive instructional support in reading and writing from university graduate and undergraduate students studying literacy assessment. Your child’s reading and writing success is paramount to overall success at school. This multi-week Summer Literacy Camp focuses on reading comprehension, fluency, word study, writing skills, and building self-confidence in your child’s reading and writing abilities. This Camp also fosters interest, pleasure, and success in reading and writing. By assessing your child’s current reading and writing strategies, your child’s assigned teacher will individualize the instruction based on the particular strengths and areas of challenge that will most support your child’s progress. For over 20 years, the Reading Center and Writing Camp has served more than 900 children and families throughout Genesee County from public and private schools.

The teachers in the camp have continuous access to UM-Flint’s Reading Center Library. The Reading Center Library is home to over 2,000 children’s and young adult books housed in a relaxed, child-centered library. A small observatory room in the library allows others to observe a child and teacher working together as they explore a text and boost reading skills.
