Each year, the Department of Student Involvement and Leadership recognizes the leadership contributions of students at the University of Michigan-Flint.  We honor those individuals and groups who exhibit exemplary leadership skills, engage with the campus and/or Flint community, problem-solve and develop new ideas or initiatives, while working toward a community that is inclusive of various identities and perspectives.   

Description of each award is listed below. 

 

This event will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. in the Northbank Center Ballroom.

Formal attire is recommended.

Fraternity Man of the Year Award

The Fraternity Man of the Year Award is awarded to up to two University of Michigan-Flint students who are current members of a social fraternity on campus, one from NPHC and one from IFC. The award recognizes a fraternity man for his outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Sorority Woman of the Year Award

The Sorority Woman of the Year Award is awarded to up to two University of Michigan-Flint students who are a current member of a social sorority on campus, one CPA and one NPHC. The award recognizes a sorority woman for her outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood during the 2019-2020 academic year

Outstanding Student Leader Award

This award recognizes a student leader who has shown exceptional leadership during their time at the University of Michigan-Flint. This individual has demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change on our campus. This may be demonstrated by exhibiting a long-term commitment to the goals of their organization or  involvement on campus. The student embodies important leadership qualities including inclusion, ethical decision making, purposeful, and empowering others.

Student Leader Community Contribution Award

This award recognizes the contribution made by a student to Genesee County or Flint communities. Nominees have initiated or participated in a program and/or service that addresses a community issue and has resulted in a positive change for the community/population served.

Emerging Leader Award

The Emerging Leader Award recognizes a student in their first or second year at the University of Michigan-Flint who has made a positive impact on campus.  This student is someone who has been actively involved on campus(student organization, club sport, alternative breaks, etc.). The individual should have demonstrated inclusion, purpose, and ethical leadership while maintaining a 3.0 or above cumulative grade point average.

Emerging Leader Award Nomination

Club Sports Most Valuable Player Award

This award is given to an individual club sports athlete for positively impacting their team, and this person may make their impact felt in a number of different ways. Perhaps this is through outstanding athletic performances, or simply being the most improved on the roster. Maybe they are the athlete that happily stays late to help out, or continues to cheer on their teammates regardless of their own performance. Nominees should also display strong sportsmanship and have a cumulative 2.75 GPA.

Club Sports Most Valuable Player

Club Sports Officer Leadership Award

This award recognizes someone who has shown exceptional leadership as an officer for their Club Sports team. This individual has demonstrated a commitment to their organization’s goals by building a positive and organized team environment.   This officer should embody important leadership qualities such as strong professional communication, the ability to motivate others, integrity, and solid critical thinking skills. The nominee should have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

This award recognizes the dedication of student organization faculty or staff advisor.  Nominees should be individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the organization, effectively motivated the organization to fulfill their mission and goals, and served as a resource.

Outstanding Student Organization Award

This award recognizes a student organization that has demonstrated ethical leadership qualities and contributions to the University of Michigan-Flint during the 2019-2020 academic year.  An outstanding organization exhibits strong leadership skills such as teamwork, collaboration, communication, while also implementing initiatives that fulfill the mission of their organization.  The organization is also one that is committed to furthering the university’s mission and positively impacting the quality of student life on campus.

Student Organization Community Contribution Award

This award recognizes the contribution made by a recognized student organization to Genesee County or Flint communities.  The organization has provided programs and/or services to the community with the goal of having a positive impact on the community/population served.
