The Economic Forum was on Friday, December 11, 2020, from 12:00pm – 1:30pm.
This annual event features a panel of financial and economic leaders who will address the topics of U.S. and World Economics. This year’s panel members are Thomas O'Rourke, CFA Director & Senior Portfolio Manager for BlackRock Private Investors, Dr. Yener Kandogan, Associate Dean and Professor of International Business, School of Management, Dr. Christopher Douglas, Associate Professor & Department Chair of Economics, Department of Economics. Join the Marketing Club at the University of Michigan-Flint School of Management for an informative and engaging business-focused presentation from Ryan LaFontaine, CEO.
The presentation title is Environmentalism Boosting Business. Attendees will learn about how protection of the environment can give a company a competitive advantage and lead to new marketing strategies. The LaFontaine Automotive Group consists of 36 franchises, 17 retail locations, and seven full-service collision centers that employ over 1,300 individuals across Michigan. The La Fontaine commitment to the environment has led to four nationally-recognized LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certified facilities, at a cost of $8 million. Learn the best strategies for LEED construction and ROI. At the age of 15 years, Ryan La Fontaine started selling cars and worked in every department at the family's dealership. Speaker Bio:
Dr. David J. Luke joined the University of Michigan-Flint campus as the Director of the Intercultural Center in 2018 after working approximately three years in the University of Kentucky Office for Institutional Diversity as Assistant and Associate Director of the Martin Luther King Center and subsequently as Director of the Center for Graduate and Professional Diversity Initiatives while completing his graduate studies in sociology.
A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, David is a fiercely proud alumnus of Grand Valley State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, subsequently working as an accountant and earning his Certified Public Accountant license. David returned to school to study sociology at the University of Kentucky and earned his Ph.D. in May 2018 with a dissertation focusing on affirmative action, diversity programs, and racial inequality in higher education. Dr. Luke has presented his research at numerous regional and national conferences and has authored or co-authored a number of scholarly articles and a book. As a classroom instructor at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Luke earned awards from both the Department of Sociology and the College of Arts & Sciences for his exemplary teaching of topics dealing with issues of race and social inequality. Beyond academic research and classroom instruction, David takes great joy in applying his knowledge to providing programming, student support, and other efforts to increase the sense of belonging among people of color and other marginalized students, faculty, and staff, and is grateful for the opportunity to do this work as part of the UM-Flint family.

Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to engage first-year pre-business students in a professional manner. Mentors will assist pre-business students by sharing their own experiences, knowledge, and study skills obtained through the business program to heighten academic success. Mentors will act as a resource to guide career and professional development.
