UM-Flint Theatre & Dance Opens Season with Award-Winning Revision of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”
FLINT, MI—The University of Michigan-Flint’s Department of Theatre and Dance will open its 2017-18 season with a special adaptation of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It. This play tells the story of how Rosalind flees to the Forest of Arden to find her father, but she must disguise herself as a boy. Her disguise is so convincing that it fools her beloved Orlando, who asks this “boy” to help him win the heart of the girl of his dreams—who is, of course, Rosalind herself.
Shakespeare’s play has been revised by Chicago’s Robert Kauzlaric and will be directed by UM-Flint Associate Professor Janet Haley. The script made its debut at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival in 2016, for which it won the Best of the Bard and Best Performance—The Bard (for Haley’s role) at the Encore Michigan Wilde Awards. The show will run for two weekends in the UM-Flint Theatre: October 27-29 and November 3-5.
“Audiences will be surprised to find this new adaptation quick paced and very adventurous,” said Shelby Newport, Chair of the UM-Flint Theatre and Dance Department and lead costume designer on the production. “It showcases a wide variety of student talent in new ways—there are 21 actors on stage!” In addition to Shakespeare’s language, audience members can expect “live music, song, folk dance, and performers in masks in this extraordinary live performance,” added Director Haley.
