Welcome to the University of Michigan-Flint, where academic excellence, community engagement, and affordability combine to create one of the best values in higher education for those in mid-Michigan and beyond. As a public university, we are responsive to the needs of our community, region, and state, and committed to advancing the public good.

I am honored to serve as the eighth chancellor of UM-Flint. I began my career as a faculty member in Ann Arbor, while my wife, Fataneh, was a faculty member here for almost twenty years. I know well the high standards that come with offering a Michigan degree and the role we play as a vital partner to the city of Flint and Genesee County.

This is an exciting time to join us at UM-Flint. Our campus is growing with the addition of several new buildings, including the construction of a $39 million wing on our William R. Murchie Science Building. Our schools and colleges offer high-quality academic programs that serve the needs of our students and the Michigan workforce. Our excellent faculty are deeply committed to teaching, research, and engagement. Their mentorship and guidance ensure our students receive a well-rounded education and the opportunity to engage in community-based projects, summer internships and study abroad.

Our campus, in a vibrant downtown location, offers students wide-ranging options for activities and the chance to develop themselves through a rich and life-changing college experience. The famous Flint Institute of Arts and the Flint Institute of Music, among numerous other civic resources, are just a short distance from campus. The city of Flint, the birthplace of General Motors, is on the cusp of a transformation into an entrepreneurial hub. Community and business leaders work closely with UM-Flint to provide extraordinary opportunities for our students. The annual Crim Festival of Races attracts over 12,000 runners and more than 50,000 people to the downtown campus area. I invite you to come visit our campus and see for yourself.

It is a privilege and an honor to lead the University of Michigan-Flint. We are still a young institution, nimble and innovative, confidently writing the next chapter of our history. We look to the future and see our students shaping it. And we work together to graduate the next generation of leaders and best.

Go Blue!
