The University of Michigan-Flint offers resources that allow individuals to access the support and help they need.

Physical Safety

Call 911 if you are in imminent danger or fear for your physical safety. If you are on campus, call the UM-Flint Department of Public Safety at 810-762-3333.

Medical Care

Call 911 if you need immediate medical care and are unable to transport yourself. All victims of sexual assault have a right to have a forensic medical examination administered by a registered nurse who has received advanced training to provide care and treatment to sexual assault victims. Free forensic exams can be obtained at any of these facilities:

Confidential University Resources

The University offers resources that allow individuals who experience harassment or misconduct to seek the help they need.  Sometimes an individual wants to speak to somebody confidentially without filing a report or before deciding whether to file a report.  The University offers these confidential resources.

Campus Supportive Measures

Supportive Measures are individualized services, accommodations, and other assistance that the university offers and may put in place, without fee or charge. These measures are not disciplinary and may not unreasonably burden another party. A few examples of supportive measures are:

• Course-related extensions and adjustments
• University-issued and enforced Mutual Contact Restrictions (MCR)
• Work and/or course schedule adjustments
• Changes in housing, seating, or work locations
• Leaves of absence
• Increased monitoring of certain areas of the campus
• Any combination of these measures

ECRT works with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that supportive measures are tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs. If you have questions about supportive measures, do not hesitate to contact ECRT for additional information.

It is important to know that you do not have to file a formal complaint, participate in an investigative process, or make a report to a law enforcement agency to receive supportive measures.

Supportive Measures can be requested from the offices below, although some types may require coordination with the Title IX Coordinator.

Prohibition Against Retaliation

The university will take appropriate steps to ensure that a person who in good faith participates in a sexual misconduct investigation or resolution, or assists others in doing so, or is accused of violating the policy will not be subjected to retaliation. Anyone who believes that he, she, or they are experiencing retaliation is strongly encouraged to report this concern using the same procedure for reporting possible sexual misconduct under this Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy.

Protective Measures

Court-Ordered Protection Orders

CGS has staff who can provide information about obtaining court-ordered personal protection orders, assist individuals in obtaining such orders, and assist with safety planning. A PPO is a court order given to another person to stop threats or violence against you.

Please contact CGS, the YWCA of Greater Flint, or the UM-Flint Department of Public Safety for assistance. If you obtain a court-ordered personal protection order, please let UM-Flint‘s DPS know and provide them with a copy. The university will uphold such lawfully issued orders and enforce them through UM-Flint’s DPS.

Student Financial Aid & Enrollment

Students may have concerns about financial aid matters, such as how their financial aid might be affected by a reduction in course load. Information about financial aid matters is available from the Office of Financial Aid, or from the individual university unit that administers the particular scholarship or another form of financial assistance.

Since there can be extenuating circumstances in these matters, students are encouraged to involve an advocate, such as the Sexual Assault Advocate in the Center for Gender and Sexuality, when contacting one of these offices, to ensure that the office has all of the information necessary to provide an accurate response.

CGS offers confidential support to those who have experienced violence. CGS staff can discuss options for reporting and refer to other resources on campus in the community. The Sexual Assault Advocate is able to act as a support person in reporting to the university, police, and/or in the court system.

Visa & Immigration

Students sometimes have questions about how various actions (e.g., a reduction in course load, change in work circumstances) may impact their visa or immigration status. Additionally, students may have questions regarding whether they are eligible to obtain visas (U and T visas) designated to assist victims of certain crimes. Private and confidential information about visa and immigration status is available from the Center for Global Engagement for both the primary status holder as well as any individuals in dependent immigration status, such as H-4, J-2, or F-2, who are sponsored by the University of Michigan-Flint. The Center for Global Engagement may have to refer you to external immigration counsel for certain questions.
