Meet Ken Whittaker

Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Accelerated Online Degree Completion

Ken Whittaker tried college five times before he found the right fit. UM-Flint’s Accelerated Online Degree Completion program finally gave him the opportunity to earn a degree without sacrificing the other aspects of his busy schedule. AODC gave him an entirely online path, letting him study on his own schedule instead of rearranging his life around a classroom.

As executive director of Michigan United, a statewide social justice nonprofit, he was already working full days before he enrolled. Studying online meant he could build coursework into late nights and keep his job and his community work intact.

He set his own bar from day one, introducing himself to every class with a plan to graduate with honors, then built the discipline to follow through, earning a spot as a Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar along the way. “It’s given me confidence that I didn’t realize I’d lost or lacked,” he said. Whittaker was selected to speak at UM-Flint’s winter 2026 commencement.
