Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to uphold the academic integrity and relevance of university degree programs by ensuring that students complete their studies under a catalog that reflects current accreditation standards, industry expectations, and institutional requirements. As curricula evolve to maintain academic rigor, outdated catalogs may contain obsolete courses and program structures that no longer align with professional or accreditation guidelines. Establishing a catalog expiration policy ensures consistency in educational quality, prevents the logistical challenges of maintaining outdated offerings, and supports student success by aligning degree requirements with current best practices.

Policy Statement

1. Catalog Year Determination

  • A student’s catalog year is established at the time of their initial admission to the university.
  • Students may choose to use newer catalogs, but not older catalogs.

2. Catalog Expiration

  • Students must complete all degree requirements within seven (7) years of their catalog year.
  • After seven years, students who have not completed their degree will be required to follow the degree requirements of the next catalog.
  • Coursework completed under expired catalogs may be reviewed by the appropriate department for content alignment within the newer catalog.
  • Any substitutions must be approved by the academic department and documented in the student’s degree audit.

3. Readmitted Students

  • Students who do not attend for one calendar year, must be readmitted to the university and must satisfy degree and program requirements in the catalog in effect at the time of their readmission.

4. Graduate Programs

  • Graduate programs may have stricter catalog expiration timelines due to accreditation and licensure requirements. Students should consult their program handbook for specific policies.
