Waitlisting for a Class via SIS FAQ’s
Waitlisting for a Class via SIS Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be waitlisted for a class?
A: If a class is full, you can choose to join the waitlist in SIS. This means you’re in line to register if a spot opens up. You are not officially registered while on the waitlist.
Do waitlisted courses count toward my enrolled credit hours or financial aid eligibility?
A: No. Waitlisted courses do not count toward your enrolled credit hours, tuition assessment, financial aid eligibility, or full-time/part-time status. You are only considered enrolled in courses that you have successfully registered for (not just waitlisted).
If you are relying on financial aid, scholarships, or athletic eligibility that requires a certain number of credits, make sure you are registered in enough courses (not just waitlisted) to meet those requirements.
How do I join the waitlist?
Follow steps below:
- Log in to SIS – Select Register for Classes
- In the Find Classes tab, search for the course
- When a class is full, a red message will appear stating: ‘Full – No seats remaining.’ Click the ‘Add’ button to proceed
- Within the Summary window, under the Action column select “Waitlisted” from the dropdown
- Click Submit to add yourself to the waitlist
Can I waitlist for multiple sections of a given course?
No. Students can only waitlist for one section of a course.
Can I waitlist for a course that has a time conflict with another course I’m registered for?
No. When searching for classes, a message will appear in red for the classes that have a time conflict with a course you are registered for.
Where can I see my Waitlist Position?
Students can view their waitlist position in several places: the Find Classes tab, Schedule Details and the Schedule and Options tab.
How will I know if I get into the class?
You will receive an email notification via your UM-Flint student email if a seat becomes available. You have 48 hours from the time you receive the email to register for the class in SIS. If you don’t register within the 48 hours, you will be dropped from the waitlist.
Am I guaranteed a spot if I’m on the waitlist?
No. Being on the waitlist does not guarantee registration. Placement depends on your waitlist position and whether registered students drop the course.
What happens if I drop the waitlisted class?
If you drop yourself from the waitlist and rejoin later, you’ll be placed at the end of the list. Your original spot is not saved.
Is there a deadline to waitlist for a class?
Yes. Two days before the semester begins, waitlists are purged. Students can no longer add themselves to a waitlist; registration occurs on a first-come, first-serve basis for all part of terms..
What should I do in the meantime?
- Have a backup course in place.
- Check your student email frequently.
- Speak with your academic advisor.
