Application for Credit for Prior Learning Through Professional Certification & Licensure

Students with professional certifications and licenses may be eligible to receive academic credit through the Credit for Prior Learning program.

Instructions to Students

There are three steps to apply for Credit for Prior Learning through a review of Professional Certification(s) and Professional Licenses:

Download and complete the CPL application form. You will need to provide your name, UMID, and signature attesting that all materials submitted are genuine and legitimate.

Schedule a meeting with the CPL Coordinator to discuss your certification(s) and potential alignment with academic courses offered at the University of Michigan-Flint. If there is no course for which the certificate(s) align, specify the discipline that should evaluate the professional certification(s) for which you seek academic credit.

Gather the following documentation for each certification you are submitting:

  • Description of the certificate, including the professional organization granting it
  • Curriculum or stated learning outcomes of the certificate
  • Documentation of the examination process
  • Proof of successful certificate completion

Once compiled, submit all materials to the CPL Coordinator.

Print only Application for Credit for Prior Learning (Professional Certification)

On the application form, you will need to provide:

  • Personal Information: Your printed name (last and first) and UMID number
  • Student Signature: Your signature and date, attesting that all materials submitted are genuine and legitimate
  • Professional Certifications: A list of up to five certifications you are submitting for review
  • Course Equivalencies: The course title(s) you believe represent equivalencies to your certification(s)

Once you have submitted your documentation, the CPL Coordinator will work with Deans, Directors, and Chairs to forward your materials to the relevant disciplinary faculty for review.

The CPL Coordinator’s signature on your application does not signify approval of credit. It only documents the CPL Coordinator’s permission to apply for CPL Assessment.

Should the evaluation be negative or partially negative, students have the right to ask for clarification on the faculty assessment and be given the opportunity to address any questions emerging from the review process. Note that a complete submission should not require additional information from the student.

Important Deadline: CPL Applications and Approvals must be submitted by the 10th day of each Part of Term.
