Application for Credit for Prior Learning Through Electronic Portfolio
Students with significant work and life experience may demonstrate equivalent learning through an electronic portfolio (ePortfolio) to earn academic credit.
Instructions to Students
There are four steps to complete when submitting an ePortfolio to evaluate Credit for Prior Learning:
Step 1: Identify Your Learning Experiences
Think carefully about your work and/or life experiences and align those experiences and the learning to at least one course in the program you believe is a potential equivalent.
Step 2: Meet with the CPL Coordinator
Schedule a meeting with the CPL Coordinator to discuss your ideas, review relevant syllabi, and evaluate the alignment of your work and/or life experience with the proposed course equivalencies. Your portfolio must provide evidence that you have met the objectives and learning outcomes for the course(s) you are seeking credit.
Step 3: Complete and Sign the Application
Once you have your plan reviewed and receive permission to apply for CPL through an ePortfolio evaluation, sign the completed form that includes:
- Summary of Work Experience and Learning Outcomes
- Courses you are seeking credit for
- Course objectives and learning outcomes
Step 4: Complete Portfolio Training and Submit
The CPL Coordinator will enroll you in the portfolio training module required to submit an ePortfolio for review. Complete the training module and prepare your ePortfolio per guidelines. Once completed, you will provide a sharable link to your CPL ePortfolio.

Letter of Intent Requirements
Submit a letter of intent with your application form that summarizes relevant work experience that has resulted in achieving the stated Learning Outcomes. Your letter should:
- List Course Objectives with capital letters (A, B, C, etc.)
- List Learning Outcomes with numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.)
- Summarize the course and Learning Outcomes
Important: A proper ePortfolio will encompass a single discipline. If you are seeking CPL for multiple subject areas, you will need to submit separate ePortfolios for each content area.
Evaluation Fees
By signing the application form, you acknowledge and agree to the following:
- $500 CPL Evaluation Fee — Due if your CPL application is approved
- $525 CPL Evaluation Fee — Required if you miss the deadline and must reapply
ePortfolio Review and Evaluation
The CPL Coordinator will work with Deans, Directors, and Chairs to arrange for a faculty content expert to conduct the evaluation of your ePortfolio.
The faculty will be provided with the link to your portfolio and will undertake an initial review to determine if you have provided sufficient evidence of equivalent learning for the class you are applying for Credit for Prior Learning.
- Students will have the option to amend the portfolio once
- The final review should not take longer than four weeks
The CPL Coordinator’s signature on your application does not signify approval of credit. It only documents the CPL Coordinator’s permission to apply for CPL Assessment.
Appeal Process
Should the final evaluation be negative, students have the option to appeal the final decision through the Academic Unit’s Student Grievance Procedure. See the University Catalog for details.
Important Deadline: You must submit your completed ePortfolio no later than the end of the 10th day of each Part of Term in which you begin your application.
