Evaluation Overview

There are two major components to the Credit for Prior Learning Portfolio Review:

  1. Evaluation of the Student Narrative — Assesses how you articulate your learning from experience
  2. Evaluation of Learning Outcomes — Assesses your demonstration of specific course learning outcomes

Each criterion is scored on a 0-1 point scale, where 1 point indicates you have met the standard.

Part 1: Evaluation of Student Narrative

Your narrative must articulate three key elements. Each is evaluated using the criteria below.

Learning From Experience

0 Points: Student does not recognize the distinction between experience and learning and conflates time in a position with the acquisition of college-level learning.

1 Point: Student describes learning from experience that goes beyond “time on the job” and provides specific examples of the learning achieved.

Reflection

0 Points: Student does not provide any reflection on their learning and submits a resume-like narrative of successive experiences.

1 Point: Student demonstrates the value gained from reflecting on one’s learning experiences and provides concrete examples of such reflections.

Application of Learning

0 Points: The student has not demonstrated that learning is transferable to other contexts or that it extends from the original experience.

1 Point: The student has demonstrated that learning is transferable and can be applied to other contexts, either in practice or by hypothetical example.

Part 2: Evaluation of Learning Outcomes

Awarding of academic credit for prior learning is grounded in the demonstration and documentation of your learning. This portion of the rubric specifically addresses each learning outcome of the course for which you are seeking CPL.

If the learning documented does not align with a course in the University’s Catalog, you will articulate the learning outcomes in the form submitted with your application.

For each learning outcome, evaluators will assess three criteria:

Learning Outcome Identified and Addressed

0 Points: Narrative does not demonstrate adequate mastery of the course learning outcome.

1 Point: Narrative demonstrates adequate mastery of the course learning outcome.

Supporting Documentation

0 Points: Portfolio does not contain supporting documentation for the learning outcome.

1 Point: Portfolio contains appropriate supporting documentation for the learning outcome.

Alignment

0 Points: Narrative fails to align work product with learning outcome.

1 Point: Narrative sufficiently aligns work product with learning outcome.

Learning Outcomes Capacity

The evaluation form accommodates up to thirteen learning outcomes. While it should not be necessary, if additional student learning outcomes are required, additional sections can be appended to the form.

Tips for a Successful ePortfolio

  • Go beyond listing experiences — Clearly distinguish between time spent in a role and actual learning achieved
  • Include genuine reflection — Avoid resume-style narratives; demonstrate how you’ve thought about and grown from your experiences
  • Show transferability — Explain how your learning can be applied in other contexts
  • Provide documentation — Include appropriate supporting materials for each learning outcome
  • Align clearly — Explicitly connect your work products to specific learning outcomes
