Students Seeking Credit for Prior Learning through ePortfolios

Follow these steps to earn Credit for Prior Learning at UM-Flint.

Step 1: Meet with Your Professional Advisor

Student meets with their Professional Advisor to learn about the CPL requirements, process, and identifies relevant
course(s) to align course objectives

Step 2: Meet with the CPL Coordinator

Student meets with CPL Coordinator to identify one or more courses.

Step 3: Complete the CPL Application

CPL Coordinator Sends Application for Credit for Prior Learning to Student. Student returns the completed form to CPL Coordinator. The student’s signature (though SignNow) acknowledges their agrement to pay the $500 CPL
Evaluation Fee if application is approved.

Step 4: Complete the Training Module & ePortfolio

Student Enrolls in Training Module and completes ePortfolio for Review by Faculty Content Expert.

Step 5: Faculty Review

A Faculty Content Expert will review your ePortfolio and issue a decision:

  • Approved โ€” Credit for Prior Learning is awarded, and the Registrar and Admissions are notified.
  • Denied โ€” You may have the option to amend your ePortfolio (see Step 6).

Step 6: Amend Your ePortfolio (If Applicable)

If your ePortfolio is not approved, you have the opportunity to amend it by submitting additional material.

Step 7: Amended ePortfolio Review

The Faculty Content Expert reviews your amended ePortfolio and issues a final decision:

  • Approved โ€” Credit for Prior Learning is awarded, and the Registrar and Admissions are notified.
  • Denied โ€” You may appeal the final decision through the Academic Unit’s Student Grievance Procedure (see the University Catalog).

Important Information

Evaluation Fee

A $500 CPL Evaluation Fee applies per course evaluation. This fee is acknowledged at the time of application and is due upon approval of your application.

Appeals Process

If your ePortfolio receives a final denial after the amendment review, you may appeal the decision through the Academic Unit’s Student Grievance Procedure. Details are available in the University Catalog.
