Meet Mackenzie Cowan
Elementary Education
“I needed a little bit more than just academic success. I’m going to have a whole life after this — good grades alone won’t make me happy or take me far. I need connections, friendships and experiences.”
When Mackenzie attended a campus block party her junior year, the trajectory of her college experience changed – for the better. She joined a sorority, organized school supply drives for an elementary school in Flint, and ran a fundraiser that brought in nearly $2,000 for a memorial scholarship — all before she ever stepped into her own classroom as a student teacher. Today, she’s a kindergarten teacher helping young minds grow. Her experiences at UM-Flint helped her get there.
Her advice to incoming students: “Growth doesn’t happen when you’re comfortable. Take the chance to do the things you want to do.”
