Computer Information Systems Program BS

Are you ready to gain the advanced computing and problem-solving skills that power today’s businesses, schools, nonprofits, and government agencies? Professionals in this field earn a median salary of around $100,000 per year, and demand continues to grow across nearly every industry.

You can build those skills with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Michigan-Flint. Our graduates pursue successful careers as software developers, systems analysts, data scientists, usability engineers, database administrators, IT project managers, and other related fields.

The BS in CIS program emphasizes how technology and information systems drive innovation in business and society. You’ll explore topics such as programming, data management, systems analysis, cybersecurity, and web and mobile app development. As with all programs in the College of Innovation & Technology, you’ll benefit from small class sizes, hands-on learning, and faculty who specialize in cutting-edge computing fields. You’ll also have the flexibility to customize your degree with advanced electives that align with your interests and career goals.

As a CIS student at UM-Flint, you’ll have opportunities to participate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, where you can collaborate with faculty on real-world projects, either as a paid assistant or volunteer researcher.

Beyond the classroom, you’ll connect with peers who share your passion for technology through organizations such as the IEEE and ACM student chapters, the E-Sports Club, the Game Design Club, and the Upsilon Pi Epsilon computing honor society.

Our curriculum features four prerequisite courses for program preparation, programming foundations courses, core courses in computer information systems, a series of courses in business and economics, and a choice of concentrations in data engineering, cybersecurity, Edge AI and IoT, or software engineering. You can also customize your elective pathway to fit professional interests of your choice.

Students can opt for the Computer Science and Information Systems BS/MS Joint Degree program. It allows students to earn their master’s degree with just 21 additional credit hours.

Four minors are designed for undergraduates:

Besides being eligible for financial assistance through our Office of Financial Aid, you can apply for UM-Flint scholarships that are specifically for computer information systems majors. They include:

  • Ralph M. and Emmalyn E. Freeman Computer Science, Engineering, and Physics Scholarship
  • Susan G. Helser Computer Science Scholarship Fund
  • G. Radhabai and A.V. Rajagopal Scholarship

At UM-Flint, our CIS students have so many options and opportunities that staying on top of everything can be hard. That’s where our academic advisors can help.
