How to Apply for Housing

Follow these steps to complete your housing application for the University of Michigan-Flint.

Log in to your self-service housing portal with your UM-Flint credentials. Your uniqname is the first part of your email address (for example, if your email is fredflint@umich.edu, your uniqname is fredflint).

On the upper left of your screen, select Apps & Forms from the menu to access the housing application. Choose the application for the term you wish to apply.

Quick Fact: For each term you would like to live on campus, you must fill out a separate application and contract. Fall and Winter is the only joint-semester contract.

Once you select your application, you will be prompted to sign or type your name to continue. Next, you will answer questions based on your personal preferences. Each question is important—your answers are used to match you with similar students for roommate and suitemate pairings. Be sure to answer each question as honestly as possible. Once completed, click “Continue” to move on to room preferences.

Please select three room types by rank, with the first being your top choice.

First-Time-in-Any-College Students: You must select First Street (First St) room types. If you choose Riverfront (RF) room types, you will be auto-assigned to a room type in First Street Residence Hall.

  • Double-Two Bedroom (Riverfront)
  • Single-Two Bedroom (Riverfront)
  • Single-Two Bedroom Premium (Riverfront)
  • Studio (Riverfront)
  • Single-Three Bedroom (Riverfront)
  • Single-Four Bedroom (Riverfront)
  • Single-Five Bedroom (Riverfront)

If you choose a room type outside of the ones listed, you will be assigned to a room type chosen by Housing & Residential Life.

Next, select Personal Information from the left-hand menu, then select Addresses/Contacts. You can edit your information by clicking the pencil icon on the right.

Attention: If you are under 18 years of age at the time of application, you must fill in the “Parental Verification” contact so the contract can be sent to your parent or guardian to sign. Your application will not be considered complete if this step is not finished.

You will receive a follow-up email sent to your umich email with next steps on how to sign your agreement. This email can take up to an hour to be received.

After you update your addresses and contacts, go back into the housing portal Self Service tab and select Apps & Forms to access the housing contract agreement.

Once you choose which agreement you would like to sign, you will be prompted to sign or type your name. On the page, click the link to review the contract. When you hit “Continue,” this will submit the housing contract agreement.

Pay your initial housing payment of $250 in Student Information System located in My UM-Flint. This payment goes toward the total cost of housing and is not an extra fee.

  1. Log in to the My UM-Flint Portal
  2. Under SIS, click Pay Student Housing Deposit
  3. Select your entry term
  4. Pay deposit

Housing assignments go out on a rolling basis for summer and will be sent to your UMich email account. Fall/winter assignments will be sent the first week in July.

To be eligible for move-in, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in a course for the semester in which you applied to live on campus
  • Have current balance (and previous balance if you are a returning student) paid in full or be enrolled in a payment plan

If you need to cancel your housing application or contract agreement, go back into the housing portal Self Service tab (where you completed your application and contract) and select the application or contract you wish to cancel under Apps and Forms. Click the drop-down menu and select Cancel/Withdraw This Application and submit.

  • Cancel prior to April 1: Full refund on initial housing payment
  • Cancel between April 1 and May 1: Forfeit 50% of initial housing payment
  • Cancel after May 1: Forfeit 100% of initial housing payment
  • Cancel prior to July 1: Full refund on initial housing payment
  • Cancel between July 1 and August 1: Forfeit 50% of initial housing payment
  • Cancel after August 1: Forfeit 100% of initial housing payment
