Gates Emergency Fund
Gates Emergency Fund Criteria
In memory of Jaylynn Gates, a former student at UM-Flint, the Center for Gender and Sexuality has established an emergency fund for undergraduate and/or graduate students facing housing insecurity and/or other barriers impacting student well-being.
Students who have experienced the following are eligible to apply:
- Identify as a member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and/or a part of a marginalized group. (ie BIPOC, Socio-Economic Status, Ability, etc)
- Are currently or have been unhoused prior to attending college, including residing outside of caregiver’s home for over 30 days.
Priority will be given to applicants who are residents of the Genesee County area.
Examples of emergency funding may be applied to the following needs:
- Relocation costs such as security deposit
- Stipend towards on-campus housing
- One month’s rent
- Keys/Lock replacement
- Medical/Mental health bill
- Utility Expense (ie heating, cooling, electricity, internet)
- Appliance Repair
- Temporary Emergency Housing up to a 30-day period
- Legal Name Change Application Fee
Eligible applications will be reviewed by the CGS Director and Financial Aid Representative. Awardees will be notified via email within two business days of their application status. Should a student’s application be found ineligible, students may contact the Center for Gender and Sexuality for more information.
