Scholarships & Grants

Many students balance school with other responsibilities, and unexpected challenges can make it harder to stay on track. The Center for Gender and Sexuality provides resources and information for students with scholarships and emergency funds that help ease financial stress, support academic persistence, and address housing or crisis-related needs. These resources include CGS Critical Difference Grants, CEW+ scholarships for eligible students, and the Gates Emergency Fund.

External Scholarship Opportunities

Women’s Independence Scholarship Program Inc.

The Women’s Independence Scholarship Program, Inc. began as a program of The Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF) in 1999 and for 8 years provided scholarships to women survivors of intimate partner abuse who were changing their lives through education. In December 2007, SLF Founder and President, Doris Buffett announced her intention to endow WISP as its own entity. On July 1, 2008 WISP, Inc. emerged as a “sister” organization with a mission to enhance efforts to end domestic violence by offering access to higher education. WISP is available nationally to women who have left an abusive domestic situation and who are pursuing an education designed to provide economic independence for themselves and their children.

League Foundation LGBTQ Scholarship

The LEAGUE Foundation provides financial resources for America’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender high school seniors entering their first year of institutions of higher learning. The scholarship application opens annually in January and closes in April with awards distributed in the summer of each year.

Since 1996, LEAGUE Foundation has awarded 182 college scholarships totaling $386,500 to self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBTQ+) graduating US High School Students and or US Military Base High School students based on the following achievements: a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; significant involvement in community service; and acceptance to an accredited US junior college, four year college, or university.

APIQWTC Scholarship

The APIQWTC scholarship supports queer API women and transgender people in their pursuit of technical/professional training or higher education. The Scholarship Committee hopes to recognize those who are active in the community and encourage future leaders.

Stonewall Community Foundation Scholarships

We take education seriously, knowing that it has the power to help LGBTQ people overcome complex social and economic barriers. For nearly 15 years, we have partnered with donors to create scholarships that provide unique opportunities and access to education, both in New York City and throughout the country.

Graduate Student Scholarships

Scholarships are available for graduate students admitted to or enrolled in a University of Michigan-Flint graduate program who meet the criteria. They require neither repayment nor employment. Some graduate student scholarships are applicable to students in any graduate program; others are available to students in particular programs.
