This 10-credit-hour, 100% online certificate program will equip you with the skills to develop broad-based, collaborative strategies to solve public health challenges using an evidence-based approach. Leaders with a public health background are prepared to promote and protect population health.
You will take classes in Epidemiology, Social Determinants of Health, and Public Health Administration and Policy.
If you want to expand your job opportunities, this certificate can be used to earn UM-Flint’s Master of Science in Health Services Administration. The customizable master’s degree allows you to stack two or three certificates of your choice.
Some of the classes in this certificate can also be used toward UM-Flint’s Master of Public Health.

Graduate Certificate in Public Health Curriculum
The graduate certificate in Public Health consists of ten credit hours of coursework and is offered fully online. The curriculum is designed for practicing health professionals working in settings such as health care, health insurance, government, community health organizations, and academic institutions who want to contribute to the successful resolution of public health challenges.
The certificate can be completed alone, as part of the Master of Science in Health Services Administration stackable degree program, or as part of the Master of Public Health degree. (Students pursuing a stand-alone credential are not eligible for federal financial aid and may not participate in Commencement.) After the student applies for graduation, the certificate is posted to the student’s official transcript and an official diploma stating the area of the certificate is issued.
Admission Requirements
- One of the following:
- BS in a health-related field
- BS or BBA in a business-related field
- BS or BA in another field with at least 2 years of health sector work experience
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
*Students in the final semester of a UM-Flint health or business-related baccalaureate program may receive an override to begin the graduate certificate while completing the baccalaureate degree by filling out this print-only Undergrad Students Who Wish to Elect Graduate Courses. How to Apply for the Certificate in Public Health
To be considered for admission, submit an online application using the link below. Other materials can be emailed to FlintGradOffice@umich.edu or delivered to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library.

- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Please read our full transcript policy for more information.
- For any degree completed at a non-U.S. institution, transcripts must be submitted for an internal credential review. Read the International Transcript Evaluation for instructions on how to submit your transcripts for review.
- If English is not your native language, and you are not from an exempt country, you must demonstrate English proficiency.
- Curriculum vitae or resume
- Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate your scholarly and/or professional ability.
- Statement of Purpose describing your objectives for graduate study and reasons for selecting this program
- Students from abroad must submit additional documentation.
This program is a certificate program. Admitted students will not be able to obtain a student (F-1) visa to pursue this degree. Non-U.S. citizens residing outside of the United States may not complete this program online from their home country. If you currently hold a non-immigrant visa and are residing in the United States, please contact the Center for Global Engagement at globalflint@umich.edu for guidance regarding your eligibility.
Application Deadlines
Submit all application materials to the Office of Graduate Programs on or before the day of the application deadline. The Public Health Certificate program has rolling admission and reviews completed applications each month.
