Music Program Auditions

Interested in enrolling in UM-Flint’s Music program? It all starts with an audition!

These in-person auditions take place throughout the year on UM-Flint’s campus. Interested applicants may submit materials to the Music program before the dates listed below.

To ensure timely consideration for music scholarship eligibility, it is highly recommended that you submit before the auditions in February or March.

Audition Dates

All auditions begin at 4:00 p.m., and you will receive a specific appointment time upon registration.

Audition Procedure & Requirements

  • Instrumentalists
    Instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, piano, classical and electric guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, cello, double bass, organ and harp.
    • Prepare and perform a solo on their major instrument (for example, a movement from a concerto, sonata, or a Solo and Ensemble Festival solo). An accompanist is preferred and can be provided by the department, but is not required. The selection should include contrasting musical material.
    • Prepare and perform all major scales from memory.
    • Read music on sight, demonstrating the ability to perform music unseen with a reasonable degree of proficiency.
  • Percussionists
    • Prepare and perform a solo, study, or etude on snare, one keyboard instrument, or timpani (for example, a movement from a concerto, sonata, or a Solo and Ensemble Festival solo).
    • Prepare all major scales from memory on a keyboard instrument such as a xylophone, marimba, or vibes. The audition committee will select the scales to be heard at the time of the audition.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform basic rudimental figures on the snare drum.
    • Read music on sight, demonstrating the ability to perform on a keyboard instrument and/or snare drum with proficiency, on music previously unseen.
    • Percussionists may consider performing on another percussion instrument to demonstrate further proficiency.
  • Vocalists
    • Prepare and perform two songs from standard art song literature. An aria may be one of the choices. An accompanist will be provided for each vocal audition; arrangements must be made in advance by contacting the Department of Music. Auditionees may provide their own accompanist at their own expense. Recorded or other digital accompaniments are not acceptable.
    • Sing on sight several short excerpts, demonstrating proficiency in performing previously unseen music.
