Explore our Bachelor’s Degrees in Music
UM-Flint offers three different bachelor’s degree programs.
Bachelor of Arts in Music
The Bachelor of Arts degree emphasizes the study of music in concert with selected fields outside music. Students participate in studies as music majors alongside other disciplines within the College of Arts, Sciences & Education.
Bachelor of Music Education
The Bachelor of Music Education is designed to meet the needs of future K-12 music teachers. Completing the program requirements and passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification leads to certification to teach music in K-12 schools in Michigan.
Bachelor of Music
The Bachelor of Music degree prepares students for future careers as performers and studio instructors. Students prepare solo recitals, participate in chamber and large ensembles, and study pedagogy for their major instrument or voice. This program’s high quality and rigor enable students to compete nationally as performers auditioning for professional groups and as continuing students in graduate schools.
Music Showcase
The University of Michigan-Flint’s Music Program, part of the Department of Fine & Performing Arts, wrapped up the Winter semester with a series of concerts, showcasing our student musicians and singers.
UM-Flint Music’s April Concert Series showcases excellence in student musicianship
Presented by The Carolyn Mawby Chorale and with the generous support of William Piper, UM-Flint hosted the 23rd annual Flint Festival of Choirs on February 21st and 22nd, 2026.

Chamber Choir Invitational
This annual event brings together UM-Flint’s Chamber Singers with local high school choirs for a day of learning, practice, and performance.
High School Honor Band Weekend
Talented student musicians from the Greater Flint area meet for a weekend of making music, master classes, and preparing a public performance.
Keep Music in Your Future
Join us for a day in the life of a university music student, including sitting in on ensemble and theory courses, learning more about the Music program, and exploring the UM-Flint campus.
Instrumental & Vocal Workshop
High School students from the area join us for instrument-specific workshops, enjoy performances by current music program students, and experience life on the UM-Flint campus.
Summer Vocal Academy of Music
Each year, 5th through 12th grade students from the local area participate in this two-week-long summer day camp featuring a variety of music classes and creative activities, all culminating in a public performance.
Admission Requirements
Whether you’re a first-year student or a transfer student, we aim to keep the admissions process simple, saving you time and money. We accept applications on a rolling basis; however, we recommend submitting all application materials at least 1 month before you plan to start your first semester. When applying to UM-Flint’s Music program, please submit the following:
- A completed online or paper application
- Official transcripts from all previous schools
- Review UM-Flint’s complete undergraduate admission requirements.

Academic Advisor
Additionally, the music faculty advises all current and prospective music students to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate courses for their instrument of study and degree program.
Scholarships for Music students
The Music Department has awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships during the past few years.
Scholarships are awarded during department auditions and each semester through separate applications submitted to the department.
