Accreditation
UM-Flint’s teacher education programs are approved by the Michigan Department of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation to offer programs in elementary education, early childhood education, selected secondary education programs, and selected programs that prepare teachers for teaching in all grades.

Curriculum Overview
The elementary education degree program uses a tiered, three-phase structure to equip you to become a competent teacher.
Phase I: Focus
Choose your certification band of either PreK-3rd grade or 3rd-6th grade. This will guide your foundational teaching skills.
Phase II: Practical Training
You’ll begin shadowing educators and learn core competencies such as classroom management and conducting educational assessments.
Phase III: Methodology & Field Experience
Refine your pedagogical skills and deepen your content and teaching methods. Complete a 14-week full-time teaching internship.
Career Outlook
As the US education system grows and evolves, the demand for competent and enthusiastic teachers remains stable. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 103,800 new openings for kindergarten and elementary school teachers through 2034.
As of May 2024, the median annual wage for elementary school teachers was $62,340, and for kindergarten teachers, it was $61,430.
