Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is designed to support collaborations between UM-Flint undergraduate students and faculty researchers. UROP allows students to earn paid (or volunteer), hands-on research experiences working along faculty on cutting-edge projects. Additionally, faculty are afforded the opportunity to mentor enthusiastic and talented students.
Because of the diverse nature of the research conducted at UM-Flint, undergraduate students at any level and from any academic discipline can participate in UROP. Sign up today!

Submitting Proposals:
Faculty are invited to submit new project proposals or project renewal requests via Google Forms. After review, UROP will transfer all accepted projects to the UROP domain of InfoReady, the University's internal competition site, where students can browse through the individual listings (i.e. competitions).

Recruitment Period:

Once projects are accepted and posted to InfoReady, the faculty sponsor will be granted reviewer status to review any or all student applicants (with "Approve" or "Do Not Approve" ratings). They will have a 30-day window each term (September 1 to 30, January 1 to 31, and May 1 to May 31) to recruit UROP student candidates using the InfoReady system. Selected students will then be required to satisfy the necessary University hiring steps prior to starting the project.

Performance Period:

After a student has been hired, they will have a 90-day period to work. Students are eligible for up $500 UROP stipends, work-study funding (if applicable), or service hours through the University's Commitment to Service program. Paid students will be required to submit their hours to UROP on a bi-weekly basis through Wolverine Access (email submission of hours will no longer be accepted).

The UROP recruitment and performance periods for each funding cycle are as followed:

Fall UROP:

Sept 1 - Sept 30: Recruitment Period
Oct 1 - Dec 31: Performance Period

Winter UROP:

Jan 1 - Jan 31: Recruitment Period
Feb 1 - April 30: Performance Period

Spring/Summer UROP:

March 1 - March 30: Recruitment Period
April 1 - Aug 31: Performance Period

Renewing Projects:

After a performance period, faculty interested in extending their projects into other terms, may submit a Renewal Form. If the request is granted, UROP will relaunch the competition in InfoReady. Both new and returning students will be required to reapply to the relaunched competition (returning students will be also be required to submit progress reports in InfoReady as an extension requirement).

  6. Visit Human Resources in 213 UPAV to complete the I-9 and to present your identification **
