Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is designed to support collaborations between UM-Flint undergraduate students and faculty researchers. UROP allows students to earn paid (or volunteer), hands-on research experiences working along faculty on cutting-edge projects. Additionally, faculty are afforded the opportunity to mentor enthusiastic and talented students.

Because of the diverse nature of the research conducted at UM-Flint, undergraduate students at any level and from any academic discipline can participate in UROP. Sign up today!

Faculty

Submitting Proposals:
Faculty are invited to submit project proposals via Google Forms. After review, UROP will transfer all accepted projects to the UROP domain of InfoReady, the University's internal competition site, where students can browse through the indivual listings (ie. competitions).

Recruitment Period:

Once projects are accepted and posted to InfoReady, the faculty sponsor will be granted reviewer status to review any or all student applicants (with "Approve" or "Do Not Approve" ratings). They will have a 30-day window each term (September 1 to 30, January 1 to 31, and May 1 to May 31) to recruit UROP student candidates using the InfoReady system. Selected students will then be required to satisfy the necessary University hiring steps prior to starting the project.

Performance Period:

After a student has been hired, they will have a 90-day period to work. Students are eligible for up $500 UROP stipends, work-study funding (if applicable), or service hours through the University's Commitment to Service program. Paid students will be required to submit their hours to UROP on a bi-weekly basis through Wolverine Access (email submission of hours will no longer be accepted).

The UROP recruitment and performance periods for each funding cycle are as followed:

Fall UROP:

Sept 1 - Sept 30: Recruitment Period
Oct 1 - Dec 31: Performance Period

Winter UROP:

Jan 1 - Jan 31: Recruitment Period
Feb 1 - April 30: Performance Period

Spring/Summer UROP:

May 1 - May 30: Recruitment Period
June 1 - Aug 31: Performance Period

Extending Projects:

After a performance period, faculty interested in extending their projects into other terms, may submit an Extension Request. If the request is granted, UROP will relaunch the competition in InfoReady. Both new and returning students will be required to reapply to the relaunched competition (returning students will be also be required to submit progress reports in InfoReady as an extension requirement).

Students

All prospective UROP students must search for and apply to a project through the UROP competition site. Faculty sponsors for each of the posted projects will have an opportunity to review student applications and select the student(s) with whom they would like to work.

From there, students selected as assistants must then satisfy the following steps:

  1. Obtain certification in the “Research Practice Foundations” module in PEERRS
  2. Apply for the UROP position as a "U-M Temporary Employee" at http://careers.umich.edu/. Search for the "ASST IN RESEARCH: UROP-(term)" position.
  3. Complete the "Go Blue New Student Orientation" **
  4. Complete the online background consent form **
  5. Visit Human Resources in 213 UPAV to complete the I-9 and to present your identification **
  6. (After receiving the "Authorization to Work" email from Human Resources): Complete the Employment Validation Process, optional tax documentation, and set up your payment options **
  7. (Once the project begins) Submit bi-weekly timesheets via Wolverine Access.
  8. Students interested in extending their project from term to term must submit both a progress report through InfoReady AND reapply to the project for the next funding cycle.

** = Human Resources will provide instructions for these steps via email. Please check your email periodically.

If you are an active University employee, steps 3-6 are skipped.
