First Gen Success @ UM-Flint

Welcome
A space to support, celebrate and connect our first-generation students.
First Gen Success at University of Michigan-Flint is a space created to support, celebrate and connect first-generation students. Whether you are just beginning your college journey or preparing for graduation, this page is here to help you find community, resources and encouragement along the way.
At UM-Flint, first-generation students bring strength, resilience and determination to our campus every day. This page is designed to honor those experiences and make sure first-gen students know they belong here.
Who is first-gen?
This section may help you determine whether you are a first-gen student. Click each question to learn more.
How do I know if I am first-gen?
You are a first-generation student if your parents did not complete a four-year college or university degree.
What if my parents started college or university and did not finish their degree?
If your parents took a few college classes or even completed community college, you are still considered first-gen.
What if other members of my family (siblings, cousins, grandparents) went to college before me?
Other family members who attended college can be a great resource as you start your college journey. Being a first-gen student means that your parent or parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, so the level of education for other family members does not apply.
