Before you attend law school, you need to develop fundamental skills that you can learn in one of many degree programs at UM-Flint. Our pre-law pathway guides you through selecting the right major that aligns with your interests, exploring optional minors and certificates, and engaging with others interested in a legal career.

UM-Flint offers students the opportunity to learn about the law in and out of the classroom to be well prepared for law school, no matter their major, through our Legal Studies Certificate, Law and Society Minor, Moot Court program, and individualized pre-law advising and professional development.

Develop the skills necessary to do well on the LSAT with our Legal Studies Certificate, including critical thinking, logical reasoning, argumentative writing, and more
Enhance any program of study with a Law and Society Minor, which will give you an interdisciplinary view of the law
Receive individualized mentorship from the pre-law advisor, Kim Saks, who was a practicing attorney before pursuing her graduate studies and teaching at UM-Flint

Moot Court

The UM-Flint Moot Court team is a co-curricular opportunity for students to become familiar with oral argument and brief writing.

This competition focuses on appellate advocacy, where students argue hypothetical U.S. Supreme Court cases in competition and write briefs in the brief-writing competition.

Our team participates in competitions through the American Moot Court Association each Fall semester. To date, we have had several teams qualify for playoff rounds in regional competitions, two students have placed in the top 10 orators at their regional competitions, and two students have placed 12th in the nation.

This 15-credit program will prepare you for the LSAT by developing core skills in reading, writing, and public speaking.

This practical, skills-based certificate can complement an array of majors, although students who plan to pursue a legal career will benefit immensely from its tailored curriculum.

In addition to learning the fundamentals of U.S. law, you’ll have the opportunity to examine how the law intersects with civil liberties, women, culture, the environment, and more.

We accept applications on a rolling basis; however, we recommend submitting all application materials at least 1 month before you plan to start your first semester.
