Summer Vocal Academy of Music

This annual day camp for students in grades 5 through 12 gives your child the opportunity to develop their vocal craft, connect with other kids, and explore the UM-Flint campus.

About the Academy

Continuing a 40-year tradition, the University of Michigan-Flint Summer Vocal Academy offers music instruction with a strong emphasis on singing to students from Flint and surrounding communities.

Our Academy students experience a curriculum designed to nurture students through a variety of music classes and activities. Students participate in choir, smaller vocal ensembles, vocal technique, movement, rhythm, and music exploration classes. They explore their artistic potential and collaborate as they learn, developing musicianship and vocal skills and building lasting friendships.

Our Academy students gain knowledge of music, singing, and performance experiences under the instruction of master conductors and music educators. Their work throughout the program culminates in a full-length concert performance open to the public on the last day of the Academy.

2027 Curriculum

Our two choirs are grouped by grade level, each with a curriculum designed to build vocal skill and musicianship. Explore what students in the Maize and Blue choirs will experience this summer.

Maize Choir:

Grades 5 – 7

  • Choir (twice a day)
  • Vocal Technique 
  • Marimba Choir

  • Meaningful Movement (Dalcroze Method)

2027 Academy Details

  • 2027 Camp dates: July 12th – 23rd, 2027
  • Classes are in sessions on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., for the duration of the program
  • Closing Concert: July 23rd at 6 p.m. at UM-Flint Theatre
  • Participation Fee: $180
    • Registration is open until the first day of camp
  • Early Bird Pricing: $150
    • Register by 6/4/2027
  • We invite Music Teachers, Choir Directors, and Voice Instructors to nominate their students for participation in the Academy. Please nominate students who love music and singing, can match pitch and rhythm, and are good members of your classroom, choral ensemble, or voice studio.
