Social:
Letter of Invitation
The University of Michigan-Flint will provide a letter of invitation to assist guests of graduates who are applying for a visa to attend their student’s commencement ceremony. The letter from the university will be emailed to the graduate, who can then forward it to their guests for use in documenting their visa request.
If multiple guests need a letter of invitation, please fill out the form once for each guest.
Health Insurance
If you are an F-1 or J-1 international student or a J-1 scholar whose Form I-20 or DS-2019 was issued by UM-Flint, you are required to have health insurance coverage for yourself and any F-2 or J-2 dependents while at UM-Flint (including OPT). Health insurance coverage is coordinated through the Center for Global Engagement. Students are enrolled in the university’s plan unless the student provides proof of coverage from another health insurance that is approved as an alternative. The university’s health plan is Blue Care Network.
Employment
F-1 students are eligible to work on campus while attending classes. The work does not need to be related to your field of study. You must maintain legal F-1 status while engaging in on-campus employment.

Apply for a Driver’s License
- Visit a Secretary of State office. Bring your passport, I-20/DS-2019, I-94, proof of residence, and Social Security number (if applicable).
- Pass a vision test, written test, and road test.
- Learn about obtaining a Michigan driver’s license at First-time license or ID.
Get Insurance

Getting Your Social Security Number
A Social Security number (SSN) is necessary for working in the U.S. Follow these steps to apply:
- Verify your eligibility. You need to be employed on campus to apply for an SSN.
- Gather your documents: passport, I-94, I-20/DS-2019, and a job offer letter from the hiring department.
- Visit the Social Security office at 1149 Robert T. Longway Blvd., Flint, MI 48503.
- Wait for your SSN card. The card will be mailed to your U.S. address in about 10–14 days.
SIM Cards and U.S. Phone Numbers
Stay connected to friends and family near and far! The CGE will provide you with a Mint Mobile SIM card upon arrival, but you can also consider these additional options:
Select a plan. Prepaid plans are great for international students — look for plans offering unlimited data or affordable international calling. Buy a SIM card at a store or order online, insert the SIM card into your phone, and follow the activation instructions. Then share your new number with your family and friends!
Bank Account
UM-Flint houses the University of Michigan Credit Union, where you can set up an account, or you can choose a larger bank such as Chase.

Schedule an appointment or walk in. The staff will guide you through opening a checking account and possibly a savings account.
