Proof of English Proficiency
First-year applicants from countries or regions in which English is not the primary language of instruction are required to demonstrate English proficiency in order to be admitted to UM-Flint. More information can be found at First-Year International Students.

- First-year students who have attended four years in a U.S. high school with grades of C (2.0) or better in all English classes must submit official transcripts to verify.
- UM-Flint’s TOEFL institution code is 1853.
- All English proficiency scores can be submitted via iService except how to send Duolingo results to institutions.
- Applicants who are citizens of, or who completed their previous education in, an English proficiency-exempt country may not be required to submit additional proof of English proficiency.

- TOEFL internet-based test: 84 (institution code 1853)
- TOEFL Essentials: overall score of 8.5
- IELTS: 6.5 (Academic, not General Training)

- Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency: 176

Scholarships
- CIT Non-Resident Graduate Tuition Scholarship — covers up to 100% of the difference between the residential and non-residential graduate tuition rates and is renewable in subsequent terms. Students must meet GPA and other criteria to be eligible.
- Global Graduate Merit Scholarship — a competitive merit-based scholarship available to international graduate students. Recipients must view themselves as cultural ambassadors.
- Undergraduate First-Year Merit Scholarship
Guidelines
- Students should be admitted by May 1 with a minimum recalculated incoming GPA of 3.25 (4.0 scale). The scholarship is renewable every semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at UM-Flint.
- Scholarships will be applied directly to the student’s tuition account.
Other Financial Aid Opportunities
UM-Flint general scholarships are available for students across academic and economic backgrounds. For the majority of scholarships, students must submit an online application during the application period of Dec. 1 through Feb. 15. Graduate scholarships have an extended deadline from March 1 through June 1. Application requirements vary by scholarship, so students are encouraged to read all criteria and requirements carefully before applying.

First Street Residence Hall
First Street Residence Hall is home to all of our first-year students. Students living in First Street who are first-time-in-college must have a meal plan.
Double suites have two bedrooms (one or two people in each bedroom). Bedrooms are 13 feet by 11 feet, and the common living area is 10.5 feet by 11.5 feet.


Riverfront Residence Hall
Riverfront Residence Hall is home to upper-class and graduate students. Students living in Riverfront have the option of a meal plan.
Four-person double: 865 square feet.
Two-person single standard: 715 square feet.
