Proof of English Proficiency

First-year applicants from countries or regions in which English is not the primary language of instruction are required to demonstrate English proficiency in order to be admitted to UM-Flint. More information can be found at First-Year International Students.

  • First-year students who have attended four years in a U.S. high school with grades of C (2.0) or better in all English classes must submit official transcripts to verify.
  • UM-Flint’s TOEFL institution code is 1853.
  • All English proficiency scores can be submitted via iService except how to send Duolingo results to institutions.
  • Applicants who are citizens of, or who completed their previous education in, an English proficiency-exempt country may not be required to submit additional proof of English proficiency.

More information can be found on the graduate English proficiency page. Scores must be no more than two years old. The minimum acceptable scores are as follows:

  • TOEFL internet-based test: 84 (institution code 1853)
  • TOEFL Essentials: overall score of 8.5
  • IELTS: 6.5 (Academic, not General Training)
  • Duolingo: 110
  • Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency: 176
  • Pearson PTE Academic: overall score of 56
  • MET: overall score of 52 (B2 level)
  • ECPE: Certificate of Proficiency

Scholarships

Guidelines

  • Students should be admitted by May 1 with a minimum recalculated incoming GPA of 3.25 (4.0 scale). The scholarship is renewable every semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at UM-Flint.
  • Scholarships will be applied directly to the student’s tuition account.

Other Financial Aid Opportunities

UM-Flint general scholarships are available for students across academic and economic backgrounds. For the majority of scholarships, students must submit an online application during the application period of Dec. 1 through Feb. 15. Graduate scholarships have an extended deadline from March 1 through June 1. Application requirements vary by scholarship, so students are encouraged to read all criteria and requirements carefully before applying.
